“Am I free to go, or am I being detained?” is a mantra that has been drilled into our household, sometimes to the dismay of one person (who may simply be requesting to leave the kitchen or end a conversation on shrink wrapping tools).

Cartoon police officer questions a woman who asks, “Am I free to go?”

A prized possession in the Current Editions library is Katya Komisaruk’s Beat the Heat: How to Handle Encounters with Law Enforcement, published by AK Press in 2003. A cartoon character named Sibyl Rites narrates various police scenarios, accompanied by advice and sample legal documents.

Hand holds “Beat the Heat: How to Handle Encounters with Law Enforcement” book showing a light-skinned cop detained a dark-skinned man behind a chain-link fence. The tile font references a 90s graffiti/hip hop aesthetic, with a red outline.

Cartoon officer detains a woman as she repeats, “I’m going to remain silent. I would like to see a lawyer.”

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” It made our day to hear this Nelson Mandela quote pop up in @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social’s post-primary speech this week—the same one featured in Jeffrey Cheung’s beloved Class Set poster from 2017.

Scanned Risograph print by artist Jeffrey Cheung. The print features a drawing of a dark-skinned person with long dark hair, pink nails, blue shorts, and a long-sleeved red shirt, hovering above a skateboard as if mid-trick. Below the illustration is a handwritten quote: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” by Nelson Mandela on a plain white background.

Not every artist publisher I know enjoys doing mail order, but I honestly love it. I get to write a little note to someone I’m deeply appreciative of and decorate the package with stickers we designed. It also fulfills my mail art urges with minimal effort.

A hand holds a brown cardboard mailer with a goldenrod shipping label, a blue and orange Risograph-printed “Current Editions” card with the words “Peace” and “Earth,” and a bright yellow smiley face sticker with “Current Editions” in red text. Also on the package are two stickers: a small mint green “Thank You!” sticker, and a black triangle sticker with “Current Editions” in bold white text. The background shows a gray concrete floor and flat tiles, suggesting a studio or workspace.

Visitors to Rare Books SF would do well to check out Ben Kinmont’s thoughtful presentation of the archive of Albert “Ru-Al” Jones, a prisoner on San Quentin’s death row.

A glass display case filled with various personal items, artwork, letters, and documents, many of which appear to be created by or related to an incarcerated individual. The display includes colorful drawings, handwritten notes, and symbolic imagery such as crosses, a Star of David, and a crescent moon, indicating religious themes. Prominent text includes “San Quentin Death Row,” “Albert ‘Al’ Jones,” and “Danger.” There are also crocheted items, photographs, and a wooden model resembling a prison watchtower with a clock. The collection suggests a deeply personal and possibly advocacy-related theme, highlighting the experiences of someone on death row.

A close-up of a glass display case containing personal artwork, handmade items, and written materials related to life on death row. The central artwork features a highly detailed drawing with prison bars, a clock, scales of justice, and various symbolic elements, with bold red text stating, “PUT ON THE SHELF TO DIE” and “Albert ‘Ru-Al’ Jones S.Q. Death Row.” Above it, another illustrated document includes a narrative text framed by red prison bars, with a balance scale labeled “IN JUST US” and phrases like “FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.”

To the left, handmade knitted or crocheted wristbands with red letters “PLU” and “RU” are visible. Nearby, a typewritten document is partially visible, clipped with a pink paperclip.

A detailed exhibit display featuring a colorful handmade diorama of San Quentin prison with a large yellow clock face reading “SQ” above the entrance. Below is a miniature prison cell model with a blue bed and a small figurine of a person in a prison uniform. To the right, a cookbook titled San Quentin Death Row Cook Book by Albert Ru-Al Jones is shown, with the subtitle “My Last Meal? 25 Years.” Beaded chains and handmade crafts are displayed across the glass surface.

A display case featuring various creative works by Albert Ru-Al Jones, including a colorful sign reading San Quentin Death Row Synopsis with text such as “My Life, My Faith, My Story, My Legacy.” Another artwork, outlined in red, displays a warning sign reading “Danger: The Hood.” A vibrant fabric piece decorated with crosses and hearts, bearing messages like “God Loves You” and “Family is #1,” lies on the display shelf.
