Obviously Brexit wasn't the reason for the US closures, but chains that had schools in North America/Australia/etc. and UK would be impacted across their portfolios.

Combination of things... People learned during Covid that you can study online. People can't afford to travel to study long-term. Industry was tied to growth in the next emerging market, but now there aren't any. Brexit. Hostile attitudes to foreigners. Too many schools chasing diminishing returns.

I used to work in English language teaching. I worked in schools in Glasgow, York, Bristol, Washington DC and Los Angeles. Every single one of them, three diferent companies, closed in 2026. The language business is dead.

I had the same works on cassette, but not quite as famous a recording!

I have ready this over and over as a kid. It taught me (indirectly) about Spanish colonialism, Westward expansion and the treatment of Native Americans, the tension between domestication of and cruelty to animals... about fredom, dignity, and parenthood...
