Can there be a cult without a camera pointed at it? Mike and Merinda have asked this question a lot and it is central to this week's documentary. The Cult of the Soulful Journey tells the story of a new age group based in Minnetonka, Minnesota organized around new age teacher and channeler Soulaire Allerai. The documentary depicts Soulaire as a controlling and charismatic "cult leader." But why? Along the way we hear from former members Rik and Bil, who found themselves in the group while helping Soulaire produce a video game. We also hear the story of Rachel Raines who joined as a psychic medium along with her son David. On the tropical Thai island of Koh Phangan, Agama Yoga became one of the world's largest tantric yoga schools, attracting students searching for spirituality, healing and personal transformation. Then former students began speaking out. In 2018, fourteen women told the Guardian that Agama founder Narcis Tarcau, known as Swami Vivekananda Saraswati, had sexually assaulted or raped students under the guise of spiritual healing. Former members described an environment where sex with teachers was allegedly encouraged, criticism was blamed on negative karma, and vulnerable students were taught to distrust their own boundaries. This episode examines the allegations, the culture surrounding Agama and how spiritual authority allegedly became a powerful tool of control.

In this video, I challenge the claim that everyone who experiences abuse must have “baggage,” and that staying proves someone is insecure or needs to work on themselves. I also address victim blaming from other women and mental health professionals, and why these assumptions overlook how abuse, trauma, and barriers to leaving actually work. We can help people recognize warning signs and strengthen boundaries without making them responsible for someone else’s decision to exploit them. Why would a British ex-Mormon sue a Marriott hotel over the Book of Mormon in her nightstand? Amanda Barnett grew up Mormon in Plymouth, England. Her mother and grandmother joined the church when the missionaries knocked in 1961. Most Mormon Stories guests believed for years before something fell apart. Amanda never believed at all. She was nearly four when her grandfather died, and when her family told her he'd gone to Heavenly Father, she says she looked up at them and thought, "You're lying." Amanda tells John Dehlin about growing up as the only Mormon in her school in 1960s and 70s Britain. She describes being sealed to her parents in the London Temple at 14, asking her mother whether she'd choose God or her, and learning that the only Black man in her ward couldn't do what even the boys did because of the "mark of Cain." On her 16th birthday in 1976, she told her mother she would never believe and was never going back to church. Then came two marriages, three daughters, and her mother's early death from a brain tumor. During her mother's illness, the help that came was from charities and a hospice, not the LDS Church. Through it all she was the non-believer in a devout family. Years later she found the ex-Mormon community online, and this month she found it in person on the Post-Mormon Cruise. In the second half of the episode, Amanda and her husband Jez explain the claim she has filed in the courts of England and Wales. It's against the franchisee that runs the Leicester Marriott. While staying there, Amanda found a Book of Mormon in the drawer and complained about the racist language in 2 Nephi 5:21. The hotel told her the books are a tradition the Marriott family started in 1957. Her claim is not about religion. She argues that putting this text in a paid hotel room is racial harassment and indirect discrimination under the UK Equality Act. The only remedy she asks for is removing the books, or using the "ask at reception" card system Marriott already uses in other countries. Her grandchildren are mixed-race, which makes this personal. Her case management hearing is set for October 12, 2026. Amanda ends with a message to her family and to Latter-day Saints everywhere: read those verses and ask whether they still belong in your scripture today. You’re not going home.” In Episode 83, our guest recounts being sent to a youth behavioral modification program in Mexico associated with WWASP, the Worldwide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools. She says she had no idea where she was when she arrived and remained inside the program from age 14 until 17. She describes a highly controlled environment where communication with home was restricted, children progressed through different “levels,” and she alleges physical, verbal and sexual abuse occurred inside the facility. Years later, she says one of the most painful parts has been trying to confront her parents about what she experienced. According to her, her father told her he would make the same decision again. This is her account of losing three formative years of her childhood inside a program she says left lasting damage long after she got out. At the age of 19 Samuel Stefan, consumed by crisis, was drawn into a cult. It would be 10 years before he was able to escape. Using a technique called ‘love-bombing’ cults prey on the vulnerable, recruiting new members with love and warmth. After a period of brain-washing, members are forbidden to leave, enslaved through psychological control, and in Samuel’s case, even violence. He was finally able to escape in the dead of night, persued by other members and seek help.
