Big day for me, got to join @drewmagary.bsky.social and @davidjroth.bsky.social on the big pod. We had a real nice time and got into the weeds on all the curling stuff. And of course, nu-metal.

World Curling has dropped the potential playoff charts. Rachel Homan is in with a win and out with a loss and can only play SWE or SUI in the SF. Brad Jacobs is guaranteed 2nd and in the SF plays NOR 50% of the time, ITA 25% of the time, and GBR 25% of the time

So there’s going to be people online the next few days who try to convince you that the noise in the curling venue is distracting for the players and the players don’t want it. Don’t let them fool you; the players have been asking for this type of atmosphere for years

Women’s Draw 2: -CHN is a win GB probably had to have -both DEN and JPN showing their volatility in that game, both need more consistency or will be in trouble -USA strategy to go all out for blank in 9 and never 2 was odd to me and it cost them -gonna be a long week for ITA

Draw 1: -Classy win by GB -Crowd will be a positive for Italy all week. I like their chances more now than I did before -USA looked and played nervous -that’ll be GER’s best game of the week and Canada weathered it. Awful strategic mistake on last shot cost them

Olympic men's curling kicks off in a few minutes. Here's my attempt at a profile of Team Brad Jacobs, Canada's "Golden generation," and how good the international field has become in recent years (h/t @cullenoncurling.bsky.social) nationalpost.com/sports/olymp...

At the 2026 Olympics, Canada's 'golden generation' confronts a multipolar men's curling field
As the sport grows and the field deepens, Canadian men's curling is no longer a guaranteed Olympic superpower

Good weather of the storm for Canada through 5. That’s as good as you’ll see the Germans play for the first 39 rocks. Unlucky for them that #40 was a bad miss. We’ll see if Canada pulls away in the second half here

Rasmus Wranå now becomes the seventh curler with two Olympic golds, joining Morris and Lawes of Canada and his four countrymates Norberg, Lund, Lindahl, and Le Moine. He’ll have a chance to become the first person ever with 3 in the men’s event.

Yeah it's weird with curling in particular. A speed skater that had the chance to win a medal comes 13th and everyone goes "hey man, great try" and no one is like "we need to look seriously into Speed Skating Canada and their entire process!" But we lose in curling and everyone's like BURN IT DOWN

Was it the best week for Brett and Joce? No. Do we need a referendum about it? No. They were Canada’s best rep, this was a stacked field that had at minimum 6 teams that could comfortably win gold, and some good teams were gonna miss the playoffs. Unfortunately it was them.

Jocelyn Peterman does it again, insanely good draw. And not lost is that Brett Gallant made a beauty the shot before which hopefully spurs him on for the remainder as he’s continued to struggle a bit here today

Very interesting draw at the MD there. The teams at 4 losses will be very unhappy that Italy managed to steal on a power play against Norway, but with the USA losing to Korea and Canada also at 3 losses we could be heading for a real cluster

Canada finally got a handle on the ice in the second half of that game and you gotta hope they can take that into tomorrow. Even with this skid, remarkably they pretty much control their own fate here. Win your remaining 3 games and you’re in

John Cullen @cullenoncurling.bsky.social · 07/02/2026
So close for Jocelyn. That felt like, given how the last 36 hours have gone, a shot that could’ve turned the tide for Canada. Get it to 6-5 and shake off what’s come before. And she missed it by 0.5 of an inch

John Cullen @cullenoncurling.bsky.social · 07/02/2026
Brett Gallant really struggling in this current Canada slide, getting significantly outcurled by his opposing number the last 2 games and so far here. 5-0 after 2 is not a death sentence but it will be if they don’t get a handle on the ice quicker in games

John Cullen @cullenoncurling.bsky.social · 07/02/2026
The upside for Canada: win out and you’re fine and all your remaining games are against teams below you in the table The downside: one of those teams is a former World #1 and one of them won the Worlds less than 2 years ago

John Cullen @cullenoncurling.bsky.social · 07/02/2026
This game is gonna be pretty important for the Canadians. Last game against a current top 4 team . Win and you’re probably in, lose and you have to navigate the rest of the field and some tricky games, and most concerning: their DSC is lowest and that can break ties at the Olys

Korey outcurled Brett and Canada had probably their worst end of the game with the power play, which hurts. Still a great game but does put a bit of pressure on Canada against Great Britain tomorrow. Win there and you feel really good, lose and it gets a bit nervy

That’s a huge win for Canada. They’re probably in their toughest stretch of ITA-USA-GBR (and 3 draws in a row if you count the NOR game) and probably need to win two of them to keep playoff pace. Getting one on the favoured Italians is massive and takes some pressure off

The Italy Mixed Doubles team is one of the more fascinating Olympic stories. They’ve only played two tournaments ever—the 22 Olympics and 25 Worlds—and went undefeated in both. Most MD teams play 20-80 games a season. They’ve played 22 in the last four seasons COMBINED

On some level you gotta feel for Norway. Oh, you’re probably a bubble playoff team? Too bad, you’re the only team that plays the first 3 draws and they’re against arguably the top 3 teams in the field. Good luck and have fun out there

Opening draw thoughts: -Yes it was against the weakest team in the field but Peterman/Gallant looked VERY good -If Estonia was going to make some noise this week, you’d think they probably needed that win against SUI -only one game but SWE also looks very strong

Kinda love the announcement from Team X. Schwaller that they’re staying together the next 4 years. With (maybe) Silvana (and maybe others) retiring, it could’ve been tempting to wait and see there, but it’s a great young team staying together. Canada would do well to note

The rulebook needs work lol. Another situation where the onus is on the players and would make them look so bad. Kayla’s only recourse there was to put the rock where she thought it would’ve ended up. So what, did she think it was gonna spin to the button? Impossible situation

fwiw I don’t think this is by any means a done deal and I think the Horgans in particular will have multiple suitors this offseason. Returning with Epping is possible, I also think Brendan Bottcher returns to skipping and maybe there’s a fit there, and there’s others too
