This is an interdisciplinary project with Prof. Anna Lichtwarck-Aschoff & Dr. Fred Hasselman from the psychology side, and Prof. G. Sander van Doorn & Dieta Wagenmakers from GLIFE who contributed key insights into dynamic systems and analytical techniques.

We argue that understanding the key dynamic features of a system is essential for explaining overall model behavior, and also for guiding the development of future models.

Using examples from models of panic disorder and suicidal ideation, we demonstrate how to disentangle complex dynamics across multiple levels.

In this tutorial, we introduce two useful tools, namely phase plane analysis and bifurcation analysis, and show how they can help unpack psychological formal models.

I'm planning to go to #IMPS2026 in KR this summer! It will be my first time for IMPS and I'm very excited : ) I'd like to share some recent developments on fitlandr (cran.r-project.org/package=fitl...), and I was wondering if anyone's organizing a symposium and would like some nonlinearity? 🙂

Cutting international bachelor programs threatens psychological science » Eiko Fried
Dutch universities decided to throw international bachelor programs under the bus to appease the government. This is a terrible idea.

We believe these analysis tools can be a very useful complement to the simulation-based approach. We also recommend that future model builders try to start with a more comprehensive understanding of smaller models and build on it afterwards.

Following this workflow, we can see what exact characteristics of the dynamic functions lead to certain overall behavior of the system. We also showed that as long as these core characteristics are preserved, we can change the function forms and produce similar results.

We started with two variables, analyzed their dynamics and the influence of various parameters. After that, we also showed how to add more variables and parameters into the analysis step by step.

We used two formal dynamic models, the panic disorder model by Robinaugh et al. and the suicidal ideation model by Wang (@shirleybwang.bsky.social) et al. to show how to use these tools to understand why a dynamic system evolves in a certain way, resulting in interesting phenomena.

So I feel the ultimate solution is to choose variables wisely, limit the number of nodes, and maybe try multilayer methods. Now quadVAR is limited to idiographic data. We hope that in the future we can do a multivariate extension but I'm not sure how difficult that will be.
100
Jingmeng Cui @cuijingmeng.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
The core problem is actually at the idiographic part instead of the quadratic part I'd say. Idiographic estimations for large linear networks are already quite unprecise (see github.com/YongZhangYZ/... and doi.org/10.1037/met0...).

Jingmeng Cui @cuijingmeng.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
Theoretically, it does ask for more data points, but not super much compared with the linear counterpart as the algorithm picks nonlinear terms in a quite constrained way.

This method is implemented in an R package, quadVAR. It also includes a Shiny app that allows users to change the variable values and see how the network changes accordingly. github.com/Sciurus365/q...
