3. Why am I such a freak about gloves?Because no matter how clean you think your hands are, they aren’t. The natural oils in your hands will transfer to your silver and cause it to oxidize. If you don’t have polishing gloves, you poor dears, use tea towels/clean dish towels to handle your silver.

2. Use silversmith-cloth bags, or even better, where size appropriate, wrap with silversmith bags and then put in Ziplock (brand only) bags. I use paper napkins or basket coffee filters to separate stacked pieces to keep from scratching.

1. Day after Thanksgiving, time to put your serving pieces away! Wash with a degreasing dishwashing liquid, rinse with VERY hot water (helps dry faster). Now the important bit - put on some freaking gloves or use tea towels to cover your hands. Dry and put your stuff away WITHOUT TOUCHING IT.

STORAGE Use silversmith bags, or even better, Ziplock brand bags! No kiddingI learned this at a curatorial conference! Put clean, dry silver away USING GLOVES, mash the air out and seal. Prevents dirt and environment (eg. salty air) from harming your silver.

So get your greasy paws all over your silver when you are using and enjoying your it but if you plan on storing it, refrain from touching your clean & dry silver with your bare hands. Use silversmith gloves or you can get by with using clean tea-towel-covered hands instead.

GLOVES Environment, dirt, dust, and grime all cause silver to oxidize, but an enormous culprit is the oils in your (even clean!) hands!
