On this day, 28 years ago, the band released their debut album, Von. Originally available only in Iceland, it quietly found its way to the rest of the world a few years later. Over time, the songs shifted and grew — live versions slowly taking shape, becoming the versions many now know best.

On this day in 2012, we released Valtari, an album shaped more by intuition than plan. 13 years on, thank you for listening. What was your favourite song on the record?

~ Released on this day in 2012

"I really can’t remember why we started this record, i no longer know what we were trying to do back then. i do know session after session went pear-shaped, we lost focus and almost gave up... did give up for a while. but then something
happened and form started to emerge, and now. i can honestly say that it’s the
only Sigur Rós record i have listened to for pleasure in my own house after we've finished it”

The story behind Hjartað hamast (bamm bamm bamm). The song that almost didn’t make it.

Behind the track:
Hjartao hamast (bamm bamm bamm)

This one was always the odd one out.
We had a hard time getting
it into shape, and even today, the band feels it should've been ditched entirely.
We struggled a lot - trying different things, keeping some, throwing others away.
Our friend KK (Jónsi and Kjartan's studio partner) played harp at the start.
We borrowed a Rhodes from Mezzoforte's Eypor and added a weird funky part that makes us blush now.
Szymon Kuran improvised the violin solo, with Kjartan playing flute over it.

There are two bass tracks:
the double bass handles the attack,
the electric bass the sustain - an old Ken Thomas trick.
The vocals are very closed and compressed.
Looking back, Jónsi was probably hearing the true quality of his voice for the first time.
The song is what it is.
For some, it's an important part of the album.
For us, we would've liked something different.
