Excellent event with Gordon Brown at Uni of York last night related to his new book. Introduced by local MP Rachael Maskell the event was supported by Topping & Co - whose new bookshop has just opened in York. Approx 1000 people attended and gave the former PM some thunderous applause.

I know it’s late August but does that really justify the Church Times filling page 2 with a news item that a church in Llandudno has made an attempt at the world record for the most people in one place wearing knotted handkerchiefs on their heads? Perhaps it’s satire…

Peregrine on a grotesque at the East End of @yorkminster.bsky.social at around half three today. Haven’t seen one down at this end for a while. I think I would have an expression like the grotesque if I had a peregrine falcon on my head.

Human violence shows little sign of abating. The peace and beauty of nature might inspire us or provide balm for the soul. Yet humanity's moral progress appears to be questionable. As we enter the second half of Lent the need to spend time with the final days of Jesus' life on earth remains urgent.

The Yorkshire Wolds
While studying at the University of Hull in the mid-'80s I often sat in the theology section of the library. The librarian, Philip Larkin, had decided that the best place for the aloof subjects of philosophy and theology was on the seventh and highest floor of the Brynmor Jones Library. Sometimes, during a winter term, I would gaze out of the windows watching snow approach slowly from the direction of the Yorkshire Wolds. As the hills disappeared I knew it wouldn't be long before snowflakes started to eddy around the building.

The central altar has a tester suspended above it, a decorative wooden panel. This isn’t a kind of movable nave altar but a far more substantial reflection of the Second Viscount Halifax’s High Church theology. The altar was commissioned by his son in memory of his father.
