Last weekend I went to see the Descendants and tonight I went to see the Toadies and I need all of my favorite bands to stop getting old. They all sound just as amazing as ever but Christ we’re all getting old.

Suspiria (remake) is so good. I need to watch the Argento so I can’t say anything comparing the two, but the remake *feels* like an Argento movie.

Plutarch, Aemilius Paulus 17 has a similar account of the same night but says the Romans were banging basins and pans and lighting torches to invoke the return of the moon's light, which was customary for them.

The Latin comes from the Indiculus Superstitionum Et Paganiarum: "De lunae defectione, quod dicunt Vinceluna."

Preteen has said she wants to see the eclipse, but does not want to "bully the moon" with me. I explained to her that I'm cheering *for* the moon - VINCE, LUNA! She is not convinced and her interpretation is objectively too funny to argue with.

Livy, Ab urbe condita, 44.37 [The eclipse] moved the Macedonians as a sad portent, foretelling the setting of the kingdom and the destruction of the nation, and the oracles were no different. There was a clamor and howling in the Macedonian camp until the moon emerged into its own light.

Being the eclectic secular pagan that I am, I did a little research on lunar eclipses lately because next week has the last good visible one for a while here. Found this, and decided that I'm taking my preteen out to go shout in Latin together. Well... I'll shout. She'll judge. (Livy in comments)

Set up a pretty decent stereo in my office with nice speakers, a wiim, and a turntable and now I can’t stop buying records of every CD I owned in the 90s. I thought the roller skating was supposed to be my midlife crisis…

You wanna know who has a disturbingly good record selection? Temu I clicked an ad and while I don’t think I can actually convince myself to order anything from them, I’m a little perturbed at how good the selection is. Did not expect to see skinny puppy records on Temu.

Literally nobody is going to care about this, but I’ve been ordering DVDs from Japan like it’s 1999. This is Criterion spine #1, never opened. It’s been out of print for 20 years. This is what I’m doing with my midlife crisis, apparently.
New (still shrink-wrapped) DVD of Jean Renoir’s Grand Illusion, which is spine #1 of The Criterion Collection and has been out of print since about 2005.

Still on my old movie kick. Today it’s pre-code movies from the 30s that I thought I’d just put on as background noise and got sucked into Five Star Final. Should have known better than to put on anything with Edward G. Robinson and think I’ll be able to ignore it.

I am annoyed about it because it’s the first time I agreed to one in five years. I was happily in my bog witch era and I let some guy poke a hole in my peace because he seemed pretty darn sincere. Moral of the story is to never leave the bog, I guess. The bog *never* disappoints.

Guy was PERSISTENT about wanting to take me out and then ghosted me day after I agreed. Well before the date ever happened. Just goodnight and never heard another word. Like… did you win a bet over if you could talk me into one or something? Wife go through your phone? Why are people like this?

N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth series made her the first Black author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel. She is the first author to win in 3 consecutive years & the first to win for all 3 novels in a trilogy. Recipient MacArthur Genius Grant, 2020. #ScienceFictionDay #ScienceFantasy #scifi #booksky
A montage portrait of science fiction author N.K. Jemisin. On the left, she appears in a close-up photo with long, dark braided hair, wearing earrings, a delicate necklace with a pendant, a deep maroon sweater, and a shimmering green scarf draped around her neck. She has a calm, confident expression and gazes directly at the camera against a softly blurred dark background. To the right are three stacked book covers of her works. Top: The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth trilogy), with a dark, textured design and metallic title. Middle: The Obelisk Gate, featuring an intricate, glowing red-and-purple circular mandala-like emblem. Bottom: The Stone Sky, showing a dramatic stormy sky with a massive floating obelisk.

The overall composition highlights the author alongside prominent covers from her award-winning Broken Earth series.
