Lastly, there's Ask mode: this replaces the previous Ask tab. It's MUCH better than before as it's actually agentic and able to use similar tools to dive into your codebase and investigate issues, unlike before where it purely relied on LLM knowledge and added context.

Agent Mode in @androidstudio.bsky.social Panda 4 is getting a big upgrade: Planning Mode! Allows you to work with the agent to first create a plan then code. Though if you prefer, use Fast to jump into coding and task completion.

Currently we aren’t allowed to use most if not any 3P AI coding tools at Google, not even Antigravity w/o constraints. So I decided to just build my own agent manager that I can vibe code in above board because it’s 2026 and I can, like many motivated builders out there.

Yeah it’s not ideal and we’re working to make the free tier more reliable. But if you do really rely on Agent Mode and want to take full advantage of it, API key is the best path currently.

Default has lower limits and quota, and you can’t pick the model. We are working to improve that by connecting it with personal Google AI Pro/Ultra subs but not there yet. So the best experience is currently with API key.
