Savvy Political Class: "The President has announced on social media he wants to bomb puppies, which surely must be part of a wily verbal strategy to disarm his opponents and accuse them of hysteria when taking him literally" President: "You seeing this video of the puppies? Arm the bombers."

Homerpalooza is such a weird and interesting episode as watching it today (particularly the last 3rd of it) is such an abrupt pop-culture time capsule in an otherwise incredibly timeless season seven.

It’s very simple. A reality TV host became dictator because he turned down a role for Sharknado 4 and that’s why the king of outer space, who cheats at Diablo, got to kill Africa. Now the economy is controlled by a sex cult that has something to do with Harry Potter fanfic because of robots.

the sum total of Sam Alito’s jurisprudence on voting adds up to “You have the right to vote for a Republican and if you aren’t likely to vote for a Republican, then Republicans are allowed to disenfranchise you.”

Donald Trump is their emotional support character. It’s basically the male equivalent of women on Tumblr obsessed with a cartoon or video game character they have a crush on except the Tumblr girlies didn’t blow up the Persian Gulf.

If it were to be ever localized (doubtful at this stage), it would need some strategic aesthetic sprite changes, dialogue updates, and renames for the mentioned offenders. Story would be unaffected, and that's what makes it so frustrating and understandable as to why Nintendo will never touch it

I don't believe Shigesato Itoi is anything other than a kind-hearted individual who wanted to see people different than him represented, as he's spoken about openly. I think Mother 3 is in this weird spot as a product of early-00's culture & limited to Japan: surprisingly inclusive but hella clumsy

It's super undiscussed how one of the few Black characters in the game is designed like a ministril character, speaks in stilted grammar, lives in a tipi, AND shares a name with the then President of Nintendo of American Reggie Fils-Aimé (among the first highly visible Black executives in gaming)

Mother 3 is such an interesting game, as it's clearly a product of a big heart who openly wants greater inclusivity-- e.g. Duster's walk animation--but then also you have the kind-hearted gender non-conforming characters who are designed like a Ben Garrison strip and literally include a Romani slur

Hella premature for this, I think there is a big disconnect between primary discourse and historical results, like the assest of a strong connection to Black voters for Dems is highly under-appreciated (Obama, HRC, Biden) whereas the weakness of "loser stink" is pretty over-exaggerated (Trump 24)

perhaps because of their own media diet, pundits saw the 2024 election as an overwhelming rebuke of "woke." but ACTUAL VOTERS were not thinking in those terms. their calculation was overwhelmingly, "biden/harris is responsible for inflation, trump will make me rich."

the retconning is to support the argument that "trump won in 2024 because of anti-woke." but other than some nebulous "vibe shift" and the prominence of a few podcasters, there is vanishingly little hard evidence for this claim.

The mass retconning of 2020 is largely targeted at media figures who are still on Twitter and it’s so frustrating to see it work, especially if you were involved in politics that year.

Genuinely, it's darkly funny he just added the only post-FDR presidents he could remember: his enemies (Biden & Obama), the dead one (Carter), and Bubba (who somehow escaped "Failure" and made it to average???)

Given that the base of this is some 1948 Life Magazine bullshit, it's darkly funny that he appears to have added post-FDR presidents himself, limited to the ones he remembers: Biden and Obama (his enemies) in "Failures", along with Carter (the dead one). Then Clinton in average (??)

The excesses of the Woke 1 era mostly amount to cringe public statements, harmless vocabulary updates and loss of prestige for public figures. The backlash to Woke 1, on the other hand, is imprisoning dissidents, dismantling public education and eroding democracy. That's what needs reckoning

Despite the whining about “ historical accuracy,” the racist backlash to the casting in Nolan’s Odyssey is about the right wanting to justify racial hierarchy by projecting it into a past where it did not actually exist. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
When some on the right speak of reverence for “civilization,” what they’re doing is trying to anachronistically justify the hierarchy of race they would like to see enacted today by rooting it in antiquity. You cannot cast Black people in The Odyssey, because The Odyssey is a pillar of “Western civilization,” which they consider to be white. This faction of the far right imagines antiquity as a kind of idyllic Jim Crow universe of utterly separate civilizations, one in which the integration they despise could not possibly exist. But Greece is not as far from Africa as the North American continent is, and the modern construct of race, a pseudoscientific product of the Atlantic slave trade, would not be invented until thousands of years after Homer. Black people are depicted in Greek art. Egypt, Libya, and “Aethiopia” are frequently referenced in ancient writings. As the Black classics scholar Frank Snowden Jr. wrote in the 1970s, at least one of the characters in The Odyssey, Eurybates, is specifically described as “black-skinned and woolly-haired.” As the Stanford classics professor Sarah Derbew notes in her book Untangling Blackness in Greek Antiquity, Black people are referenced in plays by Euripides, Sophocles, and Aeschylus. They also appear in the writings of Hesiod and Herodotus. One of the lost epic poems is The Aethiopis, in which Memnon, the Aethiopian king and an ally to Troy, plays a major role.
