It's Take Cthulhu to Work Day. I'm retired from my day job, but I'm working at my job as a writer, so I put him on my desk.

That sequence from Wizards contains characters designed by Comics artist, Jim Starlin of Warlock, Captain Marvel, and Dreadstar fame.

A favorite picture taken at a Con 8 years back. With Dacre Stoker as Dracula, Amanda DeWees as Mina, Cliff Biggers as Harker, James A. Moore as Renfield, and me as Van Helsing. I'm a bit more aggressive looking that Edward Van Sloan.

These are nice copies too, with tight spines and sharp cover colors. They look unread.

My pal Kelley Jones has been doing some of the best work of his career on these Dracula books and that's saying something.

I wanted to read something Banned for Banned Books Week. Turns out I already am because Stephen King is frequently ranked as the most banned author in U.S. schools, and I am reading Salem's Lot, which is on the list of his most banned books. Fight the power.

Leiber is never far from my thoughts when writing sword & sorcery (a term he coined). My backgrounds usually owe more to Leiber than Howard.

Okay, this is apparently a Regency/Lovecraftian/Horror/Sword & Sorcery story. I'm mostly writing this to entertain myself for the Halloween season. I see this as a 1960s Gothic Horror movie with Barbara Steele, and S&S action. Anyway, definitely thinking Austen, Poe, REH, and Lovecraft.

This morning's out of context comment. "I'm ladling on those Gothic tropes like Montresor with a trowel..."

By contrast, if I use smaller scale figures the place looks huge.

You can see part of the playset box through the gap on the right. That slot is so the Dracula figure can 'walk' up the wall like in the movie.

Because people on the internet occasionally wonder odd things, someone asked why the castle doors seem short compared to the figures. The backdrop is the Castle Dracula playset from the movie Van Helsing and is scaled to smaller figures. But it makes a good background. Just go with it.

Unlike KEW, I don't own a set of Weird Tales, but I do have the Girasol two-volume set of books that reprint all of Robert E. Howard's WT fiction and poetry shot from the magazines, so I can read the stories in their original form. But they're great big books and not suited to taking to breakfast.

This edition was edited by Karl Edward Wagner, and at that time was the closest thing you could get to reading the original Weird Tales version of REH's work without the changes made by L Sprague de Camp. Unless you owned the magazines, of course, which Karl did.

Today's movie was THE ORPHANAGE from 2007. It's a Spanish Gothic Horror film, produced, but not directed by Del Toro, though it still seems very much like one of his films. If you're afraid of creepy children, stay away from this one.
