Saddened to hear of the passing of artist San Julian. Going to take some time and look through this book of his paintings inspired by the work of Robert E. Howard.

It is the Birthday of artist @danmcdaid.bsky.social . If you ever need a drawing of Conan and the 10th Doctor fighting arachnids of unusual size, Dan's the guy. This is a commission he did for me a while back.

As @pmcnamee67.bsky.social just reminded me, you can read 'The House of Arabu' in this Del Rey volume, The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard. In fact if you're looking for a great volume of horror, look no further.

If you want some sword & sorcery horror for your Halloween season, allow me to recommend Robert E. Howard's 'The House of Arabu', a tale so grim and dark that it makes today's Grimdark authors look like Sunday school teachers. Blood and dark sorcery and demonic creatures in the ancient world.

It is the Birthday of Lester Dent, primary writer of the Doc Savage pulps (as Kenneth Robeson). I've noted before, Dent is possibly my biggest influence as a writer. I still catch 'Dent-isms' in my work.

Exactly! You could write a story about all the background characters in Jack's work. Like these guys. Every one of them has character.

Jack carried that through most of his career, amazingly. Check out these two animation characters he did after he left comics. Just as confident all those years later. I got these in San Diego in 1989.

Actually just for fun, let's break down those random books on the center sofa cushion. Stuff I'm reading for entertainment and/or inspiration. Interesting spread of years. Wolfshead-1979 Cthulhu: The Mythos and Kindred Horrors-1992 Edgar Allan Poe: Selected Tales-1998 The Tomb-1970 Salem's Lot-1975

These are Karl Edward Wagner's comp copies of WHISPERS. I got them at an estate sale. I've included one of the letters from the editor that was jammed inside one of them so you can see it. Most of them have notes and stuff within.

If you were a comics reader in the 1970s, you probably ran across stories set during Tom Fagan's Halloween Parade in Rutland Vermont. Everyone from the Avengers to the Justice League showed up there, including Gold Key's Doctor Spektor. Here's the script from the Doc's adventure there from DS #18.

Fantastically wild Gothic Romance cover by Tom Sutton. I'd write a story based on just this cover. (Though I have read Joe Gill's story for the issue also with Sutton art.)

A favorite picture taken at a Con 8 years back. With Dacre Stoker as Dracula, Amanda DeWees as Mina, Cliff Biggers as Harker, James A. Moore as Renfield, and me as Van Helsing. I'm a bit more aggressive looking that Edward Van Sloan.

I wanted to read something Banned for Banned Books Week. Turns out I already am because Stephen King is frequently ranked as the most banned author in U.S. schools, and I am reading Salem's Lot, which is on the list of his most banned books. Fight the power.

Okay, this is apparently a Regency/Lovecraftian/Horror/Sword & Sorcery story. I'm mostly writing this to entertain myself for the Halloween season. I see this as a 1960s Gothic Horror movie with Barbara Steele, and S&S action. Anyway, definitely thinking Austen, Poe, REH, and Lovecraft.

By contrast, if I use smaller scale figures the place looks huge.

Charles R. Rutledge @crutledge.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
You can see part of the playset box through the gap on the right. That slot is so the Dracula figure can 'walk' up the wall like in the movie.

Charles R. Rutledge @crutledge.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Because people on the internet occasionally wonder odd things, someone asked why the castle doors seem short compared to the figures. The backdrop is the Castle Dracula playset from the movie Van Helsing and is scaled to smaller figures. But it makes a good background. Just go with it.

Unlike KEW, I don't own a set of Weird Tales, but I do have the Girasol two-volume set of books that reprint all of Robert E. Howard's WT fiction and poetry shot from the magazines, so I can read the stories in their original form. But they're great big books and not suited to taking to breakfast.

Charles R. Rutledge @crutledge.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This edition was edited by Karl Edward Wagner, and at that time was the closest thing you could get to reading the original Weird Tales version of REH's work without the changes made by L Sprague de Camp. Unless you owned the magazines, of course, which Karl did.
