iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Oh one THOUSAND percent it makes it so much darker!! I just had no idea it was coming

010

fandom led me to zig when I should have zagged and now I feel like i got hit in the head with a cartoon hammer

080

I thought I was prepared for whole cake island bc I was bracing myself for the genetic modification bodyhorror and child abuse. I was NOT braced for the traditional animation alice in wonderland benevolent tyrant musical of it all

290

man. I fucking love. one piece.

180

[five seconds later] the island where you can get eggs is carpeted in corpses,

0130

the thing is. this still genuinely is awesome worldbuilding in context

0120

me: one piece has probably the best worldbuilding I've ever experienced in basically any story ever one piece:

laughed so hard I almost choked to death

A picture of a scene in episode 786 of one piece. It's a picture of an island in a bright blue sea that's labeled "some island where you can get eggs"

Hey, I’m just asking questions. Ignorant questions, bigoted questions, questions that have been repeatedly answered for many years. Sorry, but I’m not listening to answers right now; I’m far too busy asking questions. It’s called being intellectually curious.

Loguetown: Smoker is too major a character to name here (and so is Tashigi, but I also don't care for her that much 😭). So we're going niche on this one with the guy who sells zoro new swords, Ipponmatsu. A true OP archetype (kind of shitty old man trying to do a grift)

A manga panel from one piece of Ipponmatsu who owns the sword shop in Loguetown. He's got one hairy leg up on the edge of a bathtub(?) and a mop over his shoulder, hooking a thumb at zoro's wanted poster.

Fuck I accidentally broke my thread and deleted my post about how hot Bellemére is. Well she's extremely hot

220

Dadan saved from the one piece good mom death beam by being kind of a shitty mom for a while first. Good for her I love her

160

"Is part of Cora's mom-coding the fact that he's tragically dead" why yes it is

160

good moms in one piece: Bellemére, Portgas D. Rouge, Otohime, Dadan (kind of.... she gets there), Rosinante "Corazon" Doflamingo (he's Law's mom, To Me) good dads in one piece: literally only Kyros. that's it

171

Arlong Park: our first twofer, because i said so, and because one of these is from my first read and the other is retroactive--I thought Hachi was cute and funny at the time and after Sabaody/Fishman Island I adore him

A manga panel of Bellemére from One Piece, a woman with pink hair with shaved sides and a ponytail. She's smoking a cigarette, sitting on top of Arlong's chest with a rifle jammed into his mouth.

A panel of Hachi from one piece, a pink octopus man with a sun tattoo on his forehead. Four of his arms are crossed; one of his thumbs is hooked back over his shoulder as he says "get in the octopus pot! I'll take you!"

Anyway also I really really shipped him and Sanji when I was a kid and I was right. Gin was 100% crushing hard

Even if they end up sympathizing with or helping the straw hats, the idea that all of that faith has been misplaced for so long is completely destabilizing and they end up rejecting it. Their loyalty is a massive part of their self-perception, and it almost doesn't matter who it's to or for

But Gin also introduces an interesting theme that I think we see echoed much later with Bellamy in Dressrosa, which is how you deal with a lifetime of loyalty to someone who turns out not to deserve it. In both cases, these men can't make themselves abandon someone they've admired for so long

130

Obviously we get the "feed people when they're hungry even if they're your enemy" theme massively reinforced in this whole arc, and obviously we also have the power of (specifically Sanji's) kindness

Baratie: this is the first really hard one for me!! soooo many good minor characters introduced here (Patty and the rest of the fighting chefs, Zeff, Johnny and Yosaku!!) but for the Themes I think it has to be Gin.

A panel from One Piece of a man clutching his head, in tears. Speech bubbles read "That was the first time in my life... / that anybody was ever so kind to me!!! / I... I can't kill this man!!!"

(For anyone like "but what about the merry??" please. the merry is a strawhat and a major character. moving on)

Syrup Village: I've already talked about my playground days of pretending to be Usopp's Pirates so again. No competition

A panel of Onion, Pepper, and Carrot from one piece. They're all young boys making very shocked faces, and they all have heads/hats/hair reminiscenf of the tops of the vegetables they're named after

Orange Town: listen I have a soft spot for a lot of guys on Buggy's stupid-ass crew but there is literally only one right choice here

Chou Chou from One Piece. He is a bedraggled white dog with a long head and his tongue sticking out. He is sitting. He is waiting.

150

Romance Dawn: this one's tough bc almost everyone is a major character but. Makino 💛 the first character to introduce the theme of "if someone is hungry, you feed them." Luffy you better send this woman some treasure!!!

A page from volume one of one piece that introduces Makino, the owner of party's bar in shells town. She's a tall woman with black hair and a kerchief carrying a big keg labeled BEER

150

I also think really plot-important recurring characters who are sort of neither antagonists nor nakama don't count. Like I couldn't put Shanks or Garp or Koby for Romance Dawn. I would say they have to be characters mostly constrained to that arc/island but oda loves bringing bitches back

I would have to come up with rules though. How are we defining side characters... i think anyone that isn't a strawhat or ~honorary strawhat (so not Law, Bon Clay, or Vivi), because obviously I love all those guys. Also no major antagonists, but I think secondary antagonists are fine

I want to do a "favorite side character introduced in every one piece arc" thread...

160

one piece said freedom from oppression includes advocating for the rights of children and they're right

0104

luffy telling momonosuke that he has to be the one to release the zou elephant from its walking curse long enough to defend itself even though luffy can also hear his voice. at every possible place luffy gives agency back to a child that would otherwise not have it

171

zou also another example of what i meant when I was talking about OP and children. luffy refusing to help the samurai until momonosuke asked him directly, because momonosuke might be like eight but he is the one directly harmed by kaido and the shogun... his retainers asking doesn't count

Yeah the art changes suck :( they take away so much personality. I do think the plot post-timeskip is kind of incredible though if you ever want to jump back in

110

Need to find out what happened in the void century solely so I can know what this elephant did wrong!!!

180

completely and predictably obsessed with the reveal that the millenium-old giant elephant with an entire furry civilization on its back that walks endlessly through the sea is walking endlessly through the sea as punishment for some unspeakable crime

1130

It's (as usual) worse in the anime. Tits basically FULLY out the whole time for no reason on this insanely long constantly-under-construction bridge across the ocean in the middle of winter. Like girl can we get you a coat!!!
