unfortunately in order to moderate a community you do kind of have to moderate it. which means you can’t just “well nobody reported it so it’s probably fine” ur way out of stuff like this ://

literally this. like—the set of images/profiles reported is always going to reflect the x|v community’s engrained biases—which entails a heinous amnt of racism & fatphobia. i understand not going **out of your way** searching for stuff to strike but you can find worse stuff just casually browsing!!

why do we have to “complaining works” our way into fair site moderation. i hope that people don’t just let the matter drop on acct of the current incident being seemingly resolved bc it rly—offloads the labor onto marginalized rpers to continuously educate and whistleblow in a hostile environment

while rphub amending their rules to remove the “implicit nsfw” thing is nice i simply don’t think that continuing to solely rely on community blowback to dictate whether your site’s policies are good or not is sustainable or fair to the people who are affected by those policies

actually i don't think i should be surprised. i got told to edit c&d's rules on the community page because i had the line "our rules don't protect you" (you = rightwingers, etc.) in there and (wrings hands) the rules have to apply to everyone equally... we have to know your community is safe... 🥺👉👈

still using the "maltese cross" and everything as bullet points on their website of course. i believe their rph page *was* eventually taken down? maybe? but that statement was embarrassing/abhorrent regardless, just as the current handling of screenshots of a queer black fat character is abhorrent

oh yeah everyone had a jaw-on-floor moment when that dropped at the time lmao, it's genuinely staggering. for context, the group in question was like dubiously even an rp group and yet tried to use rph to advertise anyway, too. like, <ordoimperialis dot com> <- the group being talked about there

and a general lack of intersectionality. rph is not a special case, they are not the first case (shout out to the rpc forums, which was also a cesspit) and unfortunately they will not be the last. the lack of centralization of the ffxiv rp community, then, is a a) net positive & b) feature not a bug

ultimately i don't think anything will meaningfully change even if you pressure the rph moderation team/dev about things because they are merely symptoms of much larger cultural issues wrt racism, puritan backlash toward anything that doesn't fit their standards (even if it matches the game itself)

idk i'm too employed and busy with school to really be opinionposting on the butterfly app but even when i have embraced the myriad manifestations of the ffxiv community's failures as a foregone conclusion i still sigh

There will come a day as a community admin, inevitably, where a user (or several) will come to you and leverage your own rules specifically against users who are black, trans, etc. And you do need to be prepared to go “no, fuck off”.

my faith that the site will pull itself out of the ravine it’s driven itself into is basically zero, and on top of that the new layout is ugly and broke half the site features I actually wanted to use in such a way it makes me wonder if it was tested at all

idk. i’m probably gonna work on pulling my stuff off when i have time; between this and other notable incidents (refusal/failure to enforce genai policy on writing when a whole-ass prompt was left in bio, mods letting Big Name Figures in the community ragebait ppl raising criticisms of the site,etc)

these policies also tend to harm people who are already marginalized. the ffxiv community already has a racism problem generally, and also fails to actually conceptualize basically any form of intersectionality.

So not only do they fail to work to curate an actually safe community space (esp w what you can and can’t say wrt nsfw content onsite, or even linked sites!! one of my pals runs a sapphic venue and couldn’t list it bc the rules said “do it privately,” read as “instructing on how to access erp”)

(In other words: folks whose existences are basically ascribed as being sexual by default)

back when those bs standards came out i was among the folks who were pointing out they were bs lol it is inevitable, when policies like these are made, that they will disproportionately affect queer folks, dark-skinned poc, and fat folks—

the news about rphub is disappointing but not surprising.

If bsky had polls I would poll oomfs on whether a 30 page writing sample requirement is normal to apply for admittance to a (relatively specialized?) undergrad internship-seminar-course but given that my advisor told me she only needed a 15pg sample to apply for her PhD I think it may not be normal
