this is my hole!!!
The work is called The Enigma of Amigara Fault, written by famed Japanese horror manga writer Junji Ito. He's well known for disturbing horror manga, including Tomie, Uzumaki, and Gyo.

The plot of Fault is largely that there was an earthquake that cracked open a mountain, and inside were human shaped holes, said to have been carved thousands of years ago or more. Yet they seem to perfectly fit modern people. When someone enters their hole, the hole is carved in such a way that they can't move backwards, and can only move forward, which slowly and tortuously extends their bodies and limbs. And if the last page is any indication, is somehow keeping them alive the whole time, to the point where they would reach the other side as disturbingly distorted, stretched, and warped bodies. If they survive leaving at all.

The horror comes from the idea that this was something done ages and ages ago - yet it seems to fit modern people perfectly. That itself is confusing. On top of that, seeing your "hole" creates some kind of compulsion to enter it, no matter how insane it might feel. Once you've seen your hole, you're compelled to enter it, against all reason or thought. Something about it just pulls you in, even when you're actively afraid about it and want to resist it. And even then, you're entering a hole that, as far as people knew at the time, no one had left the other side of, and is carved in such a way that entering it more than a few feet to start should be impossible... and you want to do it anyway.

The main character has two dreams: the first is from the view of one of the people who recently entered the fault. And while at first the person seemed eager, excited, and frantic to enter their hole, once they were inside they were filled with abject terror. You're trapped in this hole, only able to slowly move forward, in total and pitch darkness. You can't see where you're going or how far you've gone, and the whole time your body is being slowly, slowly stretched, twisted, distorted. And you have no choice but to keep going, since the carvings prevent you from going backwards.

The second is a dream where he's in an ancient civilization, with the holes used as punishment for some terrible, heinous crime. A crime of such massive magnitude that this was the only punishment fit for it. To be forced through these holes, stretched, distorted, unable to leave, get help, or even see how far or long it goes.

The last pages show that it's been several months since the beginning that the other side of the fault is found, with the decidedly non-human shaped holes on that side. And then someone is shown coming through - months later, still alive, still moving, and twisted and deformed beyond all recognition.

Who made them? How did they make them? Why do they seem to keep people alive? What crime could fit a punishment so horrible? Why do they fit modern people? Why do they feel so helplessly compelled to enter them against all reason?

Those are the questions that tend to disturb or creep out the readers. Of course, all horror is subjective. And sometimes giving into the media a bit and just going with it is half the fun, even if it's objectively a bit silly. And the choice of the localization to make the sound effect of moving through the fault "Drr... drr... dr..." didn't really help the final reveal either.
