Which is to say—no one grand gesture, but the grueling work of excising the most toxic aspects of an industry while actively pushing for a more equitable reshaping. With different pathways available to you at every level. I.e., when doing archival research, digging for women's work thats been buried

At times, it may be sacrificing an opportunity by suggesting a woman director who is better suited for a role, but I don't think that's what it'll look like most of the time. The problem isn't just who gets offered roles at the top, it's the affordances of the system that let you climb to the top.

Then there's moving from exercising informal authority, as above, to formal authority. Hiring women in more roles so they build up the experience necessary. Creating reporting structures that take allegations of sexual misconduct and sexism seriously, so women are safe at work and able to focus.

Kit @criticalkit.bsky.social · 13h
I think the trick is it's no one thing. First, you need to be constantly combatting the miasma of sexism in the industry— calling people out, pushing to move beyond stereotypical representations, elevating women's voices in conversations where they might otherwise be pushed to the side.

Yesterday's news about Jacob Geller broke my heart, so much that I couldn't stop dwelling on it all day. In an effort to make sense of this horrific news and my admittedly complicated feelings about it, here is my article on the Jacob Geller situation: epiloguegaming.com/what-do-we-d...

It's the variety of gameplay that's getting me. I finish a battle and I'm like— okay, time to wrap up for the night. Oh— but I do want to check one thing on the map now that I have a second. And I might as well put in some work towards recruiting someone while I remember... then two hours pass.

A lot of people are not well right now: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This is an excellent time to de-escalate conflicts and to lean into patience. This is true in our personal lives and also (maybe especially) online when it's overwhelmingly strangers crashing into each other.

This is worth a read because it eviscerates the narration of "AI solved complex mathematical problems, we can now retire mathematicians" that's currently being pushed by the AI companies. (and in general please remain sceptical of any claims to independent thinking or intent by LLMs)

Since the Zelda 40th anniversary stream is happening... This is the first (and only?) American review of the original Legend of Zelda, from the August 1987 issue of Computer Entertainer. The reviewer praised its "mythic aura" and "fairy-tale quality." Read the full issue: ow.ly/tg3s50ZJMSY
"THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (***1/2/****) from Nintendo for the NES is THE most eagerly anticipated title yet released for the system. With all the hoopla, including golden package and matching golden cartridge, we just didn't feel right about playing the game with our usual review set-up: NES Control Deck hooked up to a modest, 12-inch composite monitor. So we dragged the deck into the living room, connected it to a 27-inch Sony monitor/receiver, and dared Nintendo to impress us. Not only did Nintendo impress us with the many wonders of ZELDA, but they also managed to get us totally hooked on this excellent game. Imagine a great adventure: the rescue of the princess Zelda, the recovery of the Triforce of Wisdom, the defeat of of an evil prince. Imagine yourself as Link, the young hero about to set out on this adventure, with all 97-plus screens of the Hyrulean Overworld to explore and nine levels of multi-screen labyrinths in the Underworld as well.""Alone in the Forest
The story begins with young Link alone and unarmed in a forest clearing. If he enters the cave at one edge of the clearng, he can find a sword and begin his adventure. As an inexperienced young hero, he will suffer many defeats in the early going. The forests are full of dangerous creatures. The lakes harbor nasty monsters that shoot balls at Link. But there are jewels and other goodies to be found by slaying the creatures, and jewels can buy useful items sold by merchants in some of the caves. After wandering for a while (or following the directions in the instruction book), Link can find the entrance to the first underground labyrinth. In the Underworld, the player has an overhead view into the chambers, which are full of many surprises and more nasty creatures of all kinds. The trip through a labyrinth is a treasure hunt, with a Triforce segment the ultimate treasure to be gained. Along the way, there are monsters to fight, secret doors to discover, and plenty of frustration. As Link gathers treasures, new weapons, and experience, he is able to venture into new places and make new discoveries. Thanks to the built-in battery in the cartridge, the objects that Link accumulates are saved from one playing session to the next. It's a good thing they are saved for Link, because it would be impossible to complete this game in one sitting. (The battery also allows you to save three "Link" characters.) Players are also aided by maps and hints included in the package.""Fairy-Tale Quality
THE LEGEND OF ZELDA has a beautiful, fairy-tale quality that we found very appealing. As an adventure, it has more to offer than the typical hack-and-slash epics because of its special mythic aura that carries you into the story. And ZELDA offers an incredibly rich, deep gaming experience that goes far beyond the typical cartridge game. The game is well supported by charming graphics, superb original music, excellent animation, and smooth transitions in scrolling between locations. We believe that THE LEGEND OF ZELDA will appeal to both male and female players of all ages. It has a very special kind of magic that makes it a "must-have" for every owner of the Nintendo Entertainment System. (Solo play; Pause.) Recommended. (MSR $44.95)"

like obviously "civility" has always been used as a bludgeon for oppression and maintaining power structures, but the ways the right has been extremely strategic about adapting that to the internet and 24 hour news cycle is particularly on display here

Lamy's report was incredibly revelatory— particularly about the ways that the norms and mechanisms of "civility" and "just asking questions" are both systematically abused by bad actors and readily accepted/reinforced as legitimate by those in power (media, higher ed) who agree with them

When Real Men speak, they create their own reality. Because for it to ever be otherwise would be to acknowledge their power wasn't absolute. And—you guessed it—Real Men are absolute.

Kit @criticalkit.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Remember, introspection was something invented by nefarious academics in the 1920s. Real Men don't think— they embody an ideology already fully formed and absolute. And that ideology trumps reality— they are always Winning, always the Toughest, always Doing and never being Told What to Do.

A technology that creates sexual abuse material of women + children (who must always be subservient!) on demand. A technology that spares Real Men the trouble of researching, thinking, reflecting, and adapting so they can focus on Doing. (Real Men don't think, they Act. Refer back to war strategy)

Kit @criticalkit.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Real Men require complete subservience, so let's create a technology that will always flatter you and do what you say. Real Men don't want nuance and subtext, so let's make a technology that produces dazzling exteriors with a hollow core.

Kit @criticalkit.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Real Men require complete subservience in general, so let's make outrageous demands of other countries and blow up our partnerships when they don't comply. Real Men speak and act in absolutes, so let's make the education system doesn't provide people with multiple perspectives or nuance.

Kit @criticalkit.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Real Men don't need the government to tell them what to do and aren't afraid of a little food poisoning, so now our agricultural regulations are fucked. Real Men require complete subservience from their family, so let's roll back rights to women and children.

Kit @criticalkit.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
incredible to watch toxic masculinity destroy my country from the inside out in real time. Real Men go to war and bomb things without strategy, so now we have no missile reserves. Real Men don't take orders from women or those they deem (racially) inferior, so now we have no military leadership.

My article "Searching for the Feminine Grotesque" touches on Tim Curry as an example of the gender grotesque that breaks down the binary with transgressive results. www.typebarmagazine.com/searching-fo...
And if grotesquerie can be normative, it can equally be transgressive. Simply observing the existence of states outside the binary acknowledges the binary’s falsehood, and even while they revel in disgust, grotesque films are also filled with exploration, wonder, and exhilaration. Through the lens of grotesquerie, it’s permissible to speak the unspeakable and depict things that are otherwise never depicted. Horror often trailblazes into controversial territory long before other genres.

Dr. Frank N. Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show demonstrates how the Rabelaisian grotesque, with its balance of positive and negative, can be applied to gender to transgressive effect. To audiences of the 1970s, he was repulsive yet magnetic, villainous yet confident and self-actualized, a creator of life and a dealer of death. Yet today, now that Rocky Horror is a cult classic and a man in lipstick is no longer shocking, Dr. Frank N. Furter doesn’t read as a grotesque anymore, and the film’s grotesquerie is more noticeable in side characters like the Igoresque Riff Raff.
