Anyone working full-time for #Uber, #SkiptheDishes, #UberEats, #Instacart, etc, should be making enough to enough money for pay for housing, food, clothing, utilities and other bills. Why? Because it's the only employment some people, like my husband, are able to get and keep!

“Benefit shopping" is a myth that falls apart the second you look at a bus schedule. Most people on disability in Ontario or BC couldn't even afford the $300–$400 ticket for the 60-hour journey to Alberta, let alone the extra baggage fees for their belongings. Unless you are arriving with nothing but a backpack to sleep on a relative’s couch, you aren't getting here.

To even get keys to an apartment in Alberta, you need thousands upfront because of how rent works: landlords require the first month’s rent plus a security deposit of equal value. With a 1-bedroom in Calgary or Edmonton now costing roughly $1,300–$1,600, you need at least $3,000 cash just to sign a lease. An AISH check is only $1,940—it doesn’t even cover the move-in costs, let alone a truck or food.

If you have any belongings at all, a professional interprovincial move can easily cost $10,000 or more. For a person on a fixed income, this is an impossible sum to save. You can’t even deduct these moving expenses on your taxes unless you have a taxable job at your destination, and social benefits don't count as "eligible income."

The math simply doesn't work: it would take nearly two years of "higher benefits" just to pay back a bus ticket and security deposit, and decades to break even on a real move. Poverty isn't a choice; it's a trap that makes it impossible to leave, let alone "shop" for a better life.
No one is uprooting their entire life and spending money they don't have to "chase" social benefits that don't even cover the cost of the trip.
