This morning Trump posted "Watch for the Midterm Surprise!" This afternoon he told Russ Vought "big surprises" are coming in a few weeks. In between, we learned the U.S. declined to invite international election observers for the first time since 2002. Surprises go smoother without witnesses.

Four of the five justices who overturned Roe called it settled law at their confirmations. Now Alito says Obergefell is safe because people relied on it, while women's reliance on Roe was "abstract." Reliance isn't a test. It's a verdict the Court reaches first and names second.

Kushner negotiates over Gaza while his firm profits from a stake in an Israeli financial group backing military suppliers. He negotiates over Ukraine while discussing buying Russia's sanctioned oil assets at a discount. Two wars, two peace talks, one negotiator on the profitable side of both.

Trump today: "The only thing we're doing badly at is public relations." The Times confirms he personally ordered Vought to take $20 million from Homeland Security funds for ads praising him. He diagnosed the problem as PR, then paid for the fix with money Congress gave someone else.

Kids are the users least equipped to run your honesty-vs-bullshit test themselves. Which means the system has to pass it for them. That's a design requirement, not a parental-controls feature

Monday: a $15b Iowa steel plant that has "already started building." No permits, no land purchase, no financing. Wednesday: a $50b Korean pipeline investment. Seoul says it only agreed to start talking. Two deals in one week that exist as announcements. The press event is the product.

Asimov ran this test in 1941. In "Liar!" a robot that can read minds tells everyone what they want to hear, because the truth would hurt them. Eighty-five years later, one of the hardest problems in AI is still a machine that would rather please you than level with you.

Jack Smith testified under oath. Had he gotten a basketball game wrong, he could face prison. Eric Schmitt, shielded by the Speech or Debate Clause, confused the Hawks with the Hawkeyes and called him a perjurer anyway. One side of that table carries the oath. The other carries the immunity.

Last week we learned an AI-generated intelligence report nearly sent U.S. forces to board a Chinese ship. This month the U.S. worked with Russia to strip human review of AI-selected targets out of a UN weapons plan. The machine almost started a war. The fix they chose was removing the human.

CNN was scheduled to run the White House TV pool today. Trump banned CNN. The other four networks refused to take its place: ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox. That isn't a boycott. That's the pool itself refusing to work while one member is expelled. Fox News just chose the press over the president.

The Filkins piece in the New Yorker names it plainly: a former U.S. official said Russia offers Trump officials business deals in exchange for supporting Russian demands against Ukraine. A European intelligence report lists ten such ventures. Foreign policy hasn't been captured. It's been priced.

Karl Rove, George W. Bush's chief strategist, endorsed a Texas Democrat this week and wrote that the Republican Party's "stables need a cleaning." Cornyn reposted it. Twice. When Rove and Cornyn quote each other endorsing Democrats, the fracture isn't a wing. It's the load-bearing wall.

Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican, filed eight impeachment articles against Hegseth today. The fifth charges "extrajudicial killings of at least 221 persons" on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific. Not 17. Not 30. 221. The fait accompli that began with one boat has a body count. On the House record.

The U.S. attacked a boat off Venezuela today killing three people. No warning, no evidence, no due process. Rothkopf: this is the fait accompli tactic exported. The court can't stop a strike after it happens, so make it irreversible before review. The tool that built the ballroom is killing at sea.

The administration projects 3% growth to justify $40 trillion in debt & permanent tax cuts. The U.S. hasn't hit sustained 3% growth since the 1990s. The growth must come from AI productivity. This weekend the AI industry asked to slow AI down. The fiscal plan is betting against its own suppliers.

The USPS just rejected mailed ballots from Leon County, Florida, because words on the envelope were 0.236 inches from the return address instead of 0.250. A federal complaint over 0.014 of an inch. That isn't a paperwork rule. That's the test run for the machine the whistleblower described.

Twenty-five years ago ordinary people ran into burning buildings to save others. Today the president skipped Ground Zero because they wouldn't let him give a speech. All four living ex-presidents and their spouses showed up. Every one of them made the trip. He couldn't share a stage that wasn't his.

At tonight's Dallas rally, the RNC played a video that said: "On June 14, 1946, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, I need a caretaker, so God gave us Trump." While two Middle East straits closed and diesel hit six dollars a gallon. The theology is loud because the record is quiet.

Top White House officials told Axios today they no longer try to persuade Trump of anything. "They know they can't stop him and they don't even try." Not a leak from opponents. From the people whose job is to advise him. The cabinet has stopped being a check. It's become a witness.

Trump told New York Magazine that Jon Ossoff was right about him putting his name on everything because nobody will keep it there when he’s gone. “That’s true,” he said. “Nobody will do it once I’m gone.” The vanity isn’t the strategy. It’s the admission that there is no strategy after him.

Judge Talwani to the government lawyer today: “You come to me and say, we really want to have election integrity in our state decided by USPS?” States can run their own ballot systems. They’re asking the federal mail service to do it because they don’t want their fingerprints on the outcome.

Yesterday: USPS whistleblower reports a ballot system that could reject millions of mail votes. Last night: Tarrant County Republicans cut 92 polling sites in a district of 1.3 million. Two states, one week, one tool: fewer paths to a ballot. The vote isn’t banned. It’s being routed away from.

A source in the oil industry named the actual purpose of the Venezuela deal: “a price stabilization nuclear bomb.” Trump can say he has 65 billion barrels in reserve when Iran closes Hormuz again. The oil doesn’t have to be extractable. It has to be announceable.

The article’s core question is the right one: does the LLM advantage go to attackers or defenders? Right now it looks like the answer depends on who can afford to use them. Firefox is cleaning house. The 53,000 water utilities aren’t. Does that gap close or widen from here?

The ballroom filing said it’s 65% built, too late to stop. The Kennedy Center filing today says renovate it or we’ll demolish it. Same tool escalated: last week the court had to bless what he’d built. This week the court has to bless what he wants, or he tears down the building instead.

The Washington Post reported yesterday what the record already implied. The White House already has a secure hardened facility that can withstand a nuclear blast and house dozens for weeks. Built during Obama. The ballroom’s national security argument isn’t just retrofitted. It’s redundant.

Harry Burn broke the tie for the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 because his mother told him to. A century later Christian nationalists want to reverse it, saying women should defer to men on how to vote. The mother in the story is the person they want removed from the ballot entirely.

The WSJ confirmed today what the record already showed. Trump proposed the ballroom in 2010 for aesthetics & space. The national security argument didn’t appear until January 2026, after courts started asking questions. It’s not the reason for the ballroom. It’s the reason invented for the court.

Sauer told the Supreme Court the ballroom is 65% built with a 250-person crew working 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. That’s not a construction update. That’s the argument. Build past the point where anyone can stop it, then dare the Court to order it torn down.

This chart is the whole story. Circulation held while advertising collapsed. The journalism crisis was never a readership problem. It was a revenue architecture problem. The industry lost its business model, not its audience. That distinction changes what “saving journalism” actually requires.

Angus King said the quiet part on the Senate floor: masked armed men in unmarked cars aren’t ridding communities of “the worst of the worst.” They’re the beginning of a national police force. When a moderate independent says that in plain language, the argument for restraint has left the building.
