Family update, mom and dad are still together after dad promised to try to sober up. He's doing well even if he's having 1 or 2 beers yesterday. But the last 2 weeks or so he was clean. If he's just a 1 or 2 beers guy, I can probably tolerate that if he's consistent with it.

Jax was a victim, a hurt person hurting other people. And because she could not reconcile her feelings, and be honest with others? She lived a miserable life, isolated and hated by the others. And it was only before she died – all alone, save Pomni – that she realized a better life was an option.

That's *not* an excuse. But it's a deeply human trait that we all – undeniably – share. We all have hurt ourself and others because we acted out of fear, or anger, or even just a fundamental misunderstanding of our social construct and how our actions effect us and others. We all cause harm.

Then, the reveal happens. That it's all fake. And while Pomni and the gang rally together, despite this truth, Jax can't take it. She nearly let herself believe it was real for *one moment,* nearly accepted *them.* But this reveal shatters that. And she feels like there's nothing left for her.

So they all knew that Jax was coping in her own way. Struggling, like any of them. That she, too, was a flawed person, making sense of an impossible situation. Not excusing her. Not forgiving her. Not even *liking* her. But telling her, "You're still one of us." And that could have saved her.

Even before the scan reveal, The Circus was an existential nightmare. A prison run by an insane A.I. that could not see them as true people with their own autonomy. Where food and sleep were pointless. Where the days would blend together and losing touch meant a fate possibly worse than death.

They all had their issues with Jax, obviously. She'd been an abusive asshole, largely (though secretly) responsible for the abstraction of at least one (possibly two) people, who actively physically and emotionally attacked and bullied them. But they also, more than anyone, could empathize.

This, however, is the breaking point for Jax. Because Jax had finally begun to see The Circus as real. Begun to believe that, not only are these people, well, *people,* but that her actions were thus real too. That the pain she'd cause had meaning. And despite all that? The others accepted her.

But then, she meets an NPC, Gummiegoo, who has no idea of his own existence. His meaning. And once the truth of his existence is made evident to him, he has to come to terms with whether or not his life has meaning. Pomni assures him: It does. And this is her first step.

Pomni starts out strongly disconnected from everyone. She finds The Circus deeply distrressing. Loud, colorful, often obnoxious, and existentially horrifying. She is immediately given the impression that this place is all a construct, and its whims are dictated by a mad god.

Jax hurting others is her way of emphasizing (mostly to herself) that it's all a "game." None of their conflicts/concerns are "real," in The Circus. So why bother treating each other well? Why bother improving or building connections? They don't matter. They can't matter. Or she'd be a monster.

Jax is a pressure cooker of trauma and abuse. So while she tries, initially, to play by the social rules she'd always perceived prior to the circus, the moment that trauma is brought to the surface, her response is *destructive.* She alienates the few people she dared let get close.

But most often, people find value in each other, in themselves, in community. So we work towards uplifting, protecting, and uniting people. Pomni sees The Circus as a place full of people, and finds comfort in valuing them. Jax sees The Circus as a place of fiction, and fears valuing them.

Because "value" is a social construct. We create it theough our perception of reality; we create codes of conduct, we create systems and behaviors to "inprove" our lives. It's impossible to confirm whether or not there is an "intrinsic" value in anything; ethics, people, etc.

While none of these problems are inherently nihilistic, the very nature of The Circus elevates their struggle. What *is* value in a place like that? Why does the body even matter? Do you even *need* the approval of others? They must *find* value in themselves, others, and "rules."

I feel like the main theme of The Amazing Digital Circus is "Nihilism." Does any of this matter? Do our actions really have meaningful consequences? Pomni believes it's all real. Jax believes none of it is. Pomni believes even the NPCs deserve respect. Jax doesn't even think the other humans do.

I think reactions to the Digital Circus finale are interesting in that it kind of highlights the way a lot of online fandoms go into a series expecting big, bombastic, and lore-driven plots, whereas TADC is a character-driven story first and foremost. It was never really about leaving.

The underlying idea of Leeroy at the end is to keep holding on, no matter how bad it gets, and to let others in to help you. You never know what’s on the horizon and you CAN make changes to make your life better, so don’t give into despair.
