Oh how I wish for an edit button! HDS9 should be DS9 obviously

So yeah, I love these characters. I love Star Trek and I hope if you’ve made it this far in the thread, you do too.

And finally, SAM (Series Acclimation Mil). What does she teach us, even though she’s the newest addition to the roster? Our wanting to belong to something. She’s so desperate to be included and to experience life and everything it has to offer that we are reminded of the gift that living can be.

…this shows us that our uniqueness was our biggest weakness, but when that same uniqueness was added to the greater whole, it became our biggest strength.

What does Seven of Nine teach us about ourselves? That the human condition is the most beautiful burden we carry. As part of the Borg Collective, she lived life by subroutines and order. When she regained her humanity, she also had to shoulder the burden of freedom and how to be an individual and…

The Doctor begins as a tool, and quickly becomes a member of the crew. But that same crew does not treat him the same way, as he can be deactivated at any moment. The mirror he holds shows us how we assign value to life- and not always with consistency. He advocates for his existence…

T’Pol is surrounded by humans with no experience in the larger galaxy and she shows us how we often mistake speed for progress and is often the one to tell the crew “no” and the value of having someone around to restrain our worse instincts. Sometimes we need someone to disagree with us.

Shai-Hulud’s Tooth @crazybr4ve.bsky.social · 03/03/2026

HDS9 gave us Odo and if Data showed us a version of humanity to aspire to, Odo showed us our often hypocritical and chaotic nature. He showed us our inconsistent and unpredictable nature; our desire for order but an almost stubborn refusal to to follow a logical and committed path towards it.

Shai-Hulud’s Tooth @crazybr4ve.bsky.social · 03/03/2026

Data held the mirror to us and we see the childlike innocence we often have to sacrifice in order to make the hard calls we feel we need to make. But time and again Data shows us that same curiosity is what defines us and helps us better ourselves.

Spock, in all the various iterations of him, always was reconciling his human side with the logical Vulcan side. Emotions run deep in Vulcans, more deeply than humans and it is for this reason Logic was so necessary. And through this we learn the value of self control.

And it got me thinking: every Star Trek has that character and I’ve ✨always✨ been drawn to those characters. Spock, Data, Odo, T’Pol, The Doctor and Seven of Nine, they all hold a mirror up to us and show us ourselves, warts and all.

Today I watched the episode “The Life of the Stars” of #startrek #starfleetacademy and it featured one of my favorite characters, SAM played so wonderfully by Kerrice Brooks. I was telling my wife about the episode and she remarked that I always liked what I termed the “humanity’s mirror” character

I’m a lifelong Star Trek fan. I remember watching TNG with my dad as a kid. Then DS9 and VOY and ENT. Then going back to watch TOS. I enjoyed PIC and DISCO, and LD. I love it all. Starfleet Academy is so fun! I love it.

A grim reminder: these people will never be satisfied. There’s no point at which they will say “we’ve won, let’s enjoy life.” They will always be looking for someone else to punish, to revile, to dehumanize. They’re empty without that.

Don’t get me wrong: I love all the movies and shows. They each deliver something special to me. But I always wanted something where the space wizards weren’t going to save the day. Where ordinary people are put into extraordinary circumstances and forced to answer the question: “what now?”

I was happy to go on hearing about the thousand inconveniences of life without power after a storm offers us. Content to feel the tension of hanging out with a unliked neighbor out of necessity. But then he reminds us: Something is coming. Something dangerous.

Like right now in THE MIST I’m so involved in thinking about how a grocery store would function without power and all the hundreds of ways we get tricked up without power that I legit forgot there was a terrifying Mist that is encroaching on the narrators world. That it was just beginning.

I’ve read a share of Stephen King books and listened to some as well. I’m currently listening to THE MIST and I’m struck by something. I noticed it when reading IT: he has this talent of making the reader focus on the mundane- making us forget that we are in fact entering unsafe and scary place.
