As an arachnid hobbyist, I used to try to ease people's arachnophobia, but at this point I'm totally fine with spiders tormenting humans in their own homes

Success. My tarantula safely completed her molt in under three hours. Molted exoskeleton (left) and the recovering patient with her new coat (right). #spiders #SpiderSky #BugSky
The exuvia (shed exoskeleton) of my tarantula following a perfect extraction of prosoma, abdomen, and appendages. You can see the internal structure of the prosoma, including the points where the legs attach. The orange and black legs are preserved so well that they look as they did in life.My tarantula (Brachypelma smithi) at rest after her molting. She is black with bright orange bands on her legs and many fluffy hairs extending from her velvety coat.

My tarantula has started the molting process. Suddenly she is lying flat on her back (which always looks spooky) as hemolymph pressure builds to a point where the old exoskeleton starts to split on the dorsal side. Front section comes out first; then the abdomen; then the appendages, the tricky part

A followup to "Silent Spring" could be "Silent September." Tree crickets and katydids used to make a nightly chorus of chirping, trilling, and rasping from August through October in my leafy part of the Boston area. This year the tree canopy is mostly silent. Insect declines continue everywhere.

I think my tarantula will soon molt her exoskeleton. She has secluded herself in her lair with a thin layer of silk across the entrance. Her prior molt was just over a year ago, so the time seems right.

Rapid burial under a thick stratum of muddy sediment is the classic recipe for fossilization. Some of the deceased humans in Nepal may become part of the fossil record of our hominid species.

The xenomorph in Alien (1979). She is doing so well: feeding herself, growing, maturing, the perfect organism, her structural perfection matched only by her hostility; a survivor, unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality. And then Ripley just blows her ass out into space.

My wife has been a Big Sister mentor for the past 7 years, since her Little Sister was 11. Today we moved her Little Sister into college, where she is enrolled in the nursing program on scholarships and financial aid. She is the first person in her family to attend a university. That's pretty cool.

Your correspondent in action today. I was photographing native bees on the sunflowers at Elm Bank, a botanical park. #Massachusetts
I am standing in tall grass amid many yellow sunflowers and photographing insects on a sunflower with my camera. A field of sunflowers, all green and yellow, extends into the background, with a rolling, pastoral landscape of fields and trees beyond.

I peel a layer of Japanese beetles from the tassel of my corn. Conflicted but unwilling to do direct harm, I throw them over the garden fence and watch as dragonfly changes trajectory capturing one at the height of its parabola.

My red-knee tarantula (Brachypelma smithi), a species that occurs in central western Mexico. Bred in captivity, not wild-caught. I acquired her two years ago, when she was subadult. She has molted twice since and seems to be mature now. If so, she's 9 or 10 years old. She may live another 10 years.
A large, black tarantula spider with orange banding on the legs rests on my left hand

After 14 mercifully smooth hours of airports and planes, we returned home from Barbados at about 2 o'clock last night. The cats are glad we're back. They missed us. Every time we disappear into the bedroom they fear we've gone back to Barbados, so they scratch the door and meow until we come back.

Our friends' wedding yesterday was on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The ceremony was outdoors and managed to find a perfect interval between dark tropical rainshowers rolling in from the sea. The clouds kept the temperature down, and the stormy sky at sea made a picturesque backdrop. #Barbados

Lush tropical greenery and pink flowers crowd around an old limestone house, which has vines along one wall all the way up to the pinnacle of the roof.We see a cloudy late sunset, with varying shades of deep blue streaked by orange, behind the ocean, which is lapping the berm of a seaweed-strewn beach. At the far end of the beach a single light gleams from a headland. A dark thunderstorm is out at sea.
