Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 29/04/2026If this was that, I wouldn't do that; but this is an example of a pervasive toxicity problem that has been plaguing the FOSS community for decades because nobody has challenged it, so I will break every fucking social convention to be the rudest little bastard to every FOSS troll I bloody well see 110

Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 12/04/2026I might have gone in and let them know what I think of this behaviour as an open source dev/advocate Seriously though I hate this so much; there are many times I try to advocate for Linux use/support and get met with eyerolls because everyone thinks we're a bunch of self important shiteaters 110
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026We already know speed increases mistakes, both bugs and design flaws, even before the LLM height I was advocating for developers to take their time and evaluate the code and the systems they produce and negotiate for more time to make sure what they deliver is correct to their knowledge 010
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026Taking out what little of this deep understanding to generate thousands and even millions of systems on industrial scale, will cause catastrophes at an increasing rate, its really just a numbers game And for what benefit? That we build systems faster? This just isn't a good trade off 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026Understanding the web of impacts software systems, starting from the code which comprises it down to its secondary impacts is complex, daunting, and is not nearly performed remotely enough, and unfortunately, it is mostly done retrospectively 120
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026We are so reliant upon software systems for our daily lives, indirect impacts of system failures can also have life changing and even life ending circumstances for individuals, outages in banking apps regularly leave people stranded and even in danger 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026But none of its engineers had to foresight to see that a system with such high level of control of the aircraft receiving data from so few sensors with such few checks lead to catastrophe when those sensors failed And this is just discussing direct impacts of system failures 110
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026Then there are cases in which a software system can work perfectly without any bugs in a traditional sense, but failure to identify complex impacts of how a system was intended to function leads to dire consequences, a good example of this is Boeing's MCAS, it operated perfectly - 110
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026I once investigated a bug in the front end of an IMS used by a hospital preventing access to patient data, the bug ultimately stemmed from a obscure client side library maintained by a single developer, the lack of access to data held by this IMS was ultimately linked to 2 deaths 120
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026If you believe this tradeoff is worth it, maybe, for perhaps low risk and non-dependant systems and such as portfolio websites; however the second this system becomes depended upon (which over the course of a system's lifetime happen surprisingly easily) the risks can multiply arbitrarily 110
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 07/01/2026An language-specialised generative model with no ability to perform hard reasoning nor posses level understanding will never be able to ensure the correctness of a system, you will always be sacrificing the quality of a system using these models in exchange for speed of development 230
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 06/01/2026If your idea about the challenges facing development is that it's all to do with creating code and not ensuring code correctness, security, and maintainability; your idea of engineering of software systems is just plainly wrong 150

Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024Alas this must wait as I did not anticipate buying a PDP-11 this pay period 😅 000
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024From here, I will probably now learn how to use ODT and play around a little more; RN I just have the KDF11-B CPU card which is enough to run ODT, but next I will probably invest in some memory/RAM cards and probably also a QBONE, a modern Linux SBC card which can allow me to emulate any QBUS card 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024After a suggestion from Aaron to swap the TX and RX lines with DuPont wires, bingo! We have the ODT prompt showing on the terminal! I have a working PDP-11 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024After much poking a prodding, asking around in several groups, it didn't make much sense, provided the CPU has power it should go straight into ODT, and well, the CPU was setup identical to how it was when it was working in Aaron's machine, it had power, and even the status LEDs all seemed fine 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024So, after throwing the PSU back together, all seems to work well, I threw the KDF11-B CPU back into the backplane, attached my Wyse 55 terminal back up, ensured all configs are the same as when we tried it in Aaron's setup, and.... nothing... 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024All in a timely manner as I finished this adaptor the replacement capacitors arrived, few minutes to replace and good as new! 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024Several stickers on my BA23 saying not to short the cab kit to the BA23 chassis I decided now was a good enough time to try something serial in Fusion 360 and try to make a 3d printed adaptor to hold it in place and stop it from shorting after several hours (and swearing) I had an adaptor in my hand 100
Rhii Alexander @crashtest.dev · 18/11/2024So that was great! Waiting for the capacitors to arrive, I turned my attention to the fact that my KFD11-B cabinet kit (a 2 port DB25 serial card you attach to the outside of the cabinet), it was meant for a BA11 and so is larger and too square for my BA23 back plate 100
