Absolutely gorgeous film. Will ruin you as every damn Gong Li film does. Have a great time!

it wasn’t batman or some weird disaffection with american masculinity that created the joker. it was a tarrant county commissioner meeting 😤

nothing questions my faith in humanity like the reactions online to the final episode of Lanterns. a lot of people have almost no media literacy and truly cannot fathom ever empathizing with women. Yoikes

I am sad about the role private equity has had in Shout's transformation. But yes I also just got their 4K release of Peking Opera Blues.

okay but anticipating this would be a huge hit would be like expecting the Steve Buscemi Kool-aid movie would do numbers. like good lord who on earth was trying to say that?

The way tech has infested Hollywood is so funny. Just a yawning black hole of humanities education trying to dictate entertainment. flashy logos to entice investors. absolutely no grasp of what entertainment is beyond numbers.

In college there were guys you knew could NOT take you home because they usually sought out the drunkest girls to hook up with so if they were taking you home you were tanked. we called these dudes sluts and laughed and laughed and now at least one of them is a priest and it is all still rape.

People haven't heard the living in texas song and are acting like they're out of touch with popular music when the reality is that the monoculture has almost disappeared and that song is at the top of the billboard because of social media and spotify plays happening in places you don't go.

Laine, as always, is right on the money. companies flocked to SV because the military industrial complex had already gathered all the engineers, technology, and money there. A bunch of dudes in garages didn't build the infrastructure that made SV such a brilliant lab for developing new technology.

Curious what you think! I didn’t need a whole lot from audiobooks, tried audiobookshelf but realized I just really wanted one app.

there’s still some concern about the degree AI is involved but i’ve been using a couple of months and once dialed in really like it!

after annihilating a few lakes so I could set up all the scripts I now have Bookorbit ingesting all my libro.fm and libby books and syncing across my Kobo, xteink readers and iPhone. and it shouldn’t be so hard to just read books without Amazon or someone else controlling the whole stack.

well there’s gotta be friction to encourage you to just buy books! ive noticed there super responsive to reader suggestions for improvement except for fixing the overdrive implementation (and both companies point fingers).

the NYT’s Best TV shows list is like that one super pretentious friend who reads about TV and rarely actually watches it. just 50% mediocre awards bait. millennial ass grey of lists. we have more television than we’ve ever had and it was reduced to this???

We just had freezers of bodies near all the hospitals and the crematoriums couldn't keep up and they stacked bodies like logs in central park and the rest of the country got mad that they had to keep their kids home from school.

My mom, who has dementia, was watching a PBS documentary yesterday about NYC during early COVID and asked if I'd lived there during that time and when I recounted my experiences in a rush we both learned that apparently COVID was super traumatic in NYC! And not nearly enough other places...

Texas politics is weird because I’m constantly getting fundraising texts like DON’T YOU HATE TRANS PEOPLE AND MUSLIMS AND ”ILLEGAL“ IMMIGRANTS. Like woah boy that’s the plan? Just hope everyone is super bigoted and weird?

I'm printing my second now and telling myself I don't need to get an overpriced all workstation just to move a bunch of docker containers of a orbstack and onto linux and also print a third rack.

these are the people that don't remember Ann Richards, our lady of the enormous hair. their as ignorant as they are vampiric. Texas politics have, until the last couple of decades, been prone to seemingly erratic party shifts. the extremism usually wins out until fiscal conservatives get irritated.

Like does it feel like being in a giant factory converted into a mall? Yes. But also its air conditioned and there's a Whataburger and makes sitting through games in north Texas survivable. 50+ 100 degree days!

100% I badly want a lil thinkcentre because of how obnoxious it is running a whole homelab on orbstack on an m1 studio but I refuse to go with those prices! However I've also found myself more engaged in gadget stuff than I have in ages because of AI's impact on software development.

Between docker compose, koreader, and self hosted AI models software has never been more accessible and it’s making hardware more accessible to. But that’s probably just the stack of tiny ereaders and 3d printed home labs talking.

So happy Cornyn and others noticed what a horrible shitheel Bo French is but fun fact—his racist tweet about students at the UT game? not even the worst thing he’s said THIS YEAR. Terrific primer from February about why Texas might be stuck with him. www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...

He Wants to Deport 100 Million “Third World Savages.” He May Win Statewide Office in Texas.
He calls his opponents “gay” and “retarded,” and he wants to deport 100 million “third world savages.” Naturally, he’s running for railroad commissioner.

There are a ton! The homelab/self-hosted scene is full of really delightful apps. They come out so often there are requirements on the subreddits requiring AI-use disclosure. There's also a resurgent in the Mac app scene, though most cannot be installed through the app store.

Yeah I did Taiwan in 2019 and was so annoyed there was no nearby outlet in any apartment since then. if we can have AI that kills we should at least have bidets everywhere. Its a solved problem!

spent a whole afternoon installing a Toto bidet toilet seat and NO REGRETS except not holding the nut when detaching the water hose which required a visit to the hardware store to buy a new fill valve. Why are bidets not standard? I thought we lived in a society!!!!

the way to stop out of control AI is to regulate the humans creating the out of control AI. oh your ai broke containment and caused millions in damage? that’s not an act of God, that’s you not building adequate safeguards.

I just finished a miniseries rewatch and am a little over halfway through the book and it is so rich for adaptation again. the 89 series does a real disservice to Lorena and Ellie and suffers because of the pacing demanded for 80s broadcast TV. could have sworn Sheridan had the rights, not his buds.

Lioness is like 40% Zoe Saldaña doing Taylor Sheridan-written rants about how dumb most Americans are. it's super condescending but also like 95% right. and it feels like the most accurate portrayal of the rural Texan mindset I've seen on TV.

80 percent of recipients are single mothers. this is just further punishment of women for not being married and deigning to have lives outside of marriage and the policy is reductive and abhorrent and deeply deeply sexist.

they’ve got to be attractive relatively affluent white women failed repeatedly by the US healthcare system and their own family and friends who then commit murders while suffering postpartum psychosis and have interest in their trial dramatically inflated by social media algorithms.

This is the thing! AI is a tool! It's a powerful and useful one! It's just the people deploying it are doing so in the most reckless, greedy and destructive way possible and being shocked everyone isn't hailing the technology as the next iPhone.

Literally behind every single miracle fully automated service, from LLMs to self-driving cars, there's actually a bunch of poorly paid people being taken advantage of by companies with lots of funding and a "fake it til you make it" ethos. The only automated stuff is the beautiful AI app slop.
