In college there were guys you knew could NOT take you home because they usually sought out the drunkest girls to hook up with so if they were taking you home you were tanked. we called these dudes sluts and laughed and laughed and now at least one of them is a priest and it is all still rape.

People haven't heard the living in texas song and are acting like they're out of touch with popular music when the reality is that the monoculture has almost disappeared and that song is at the top of the billboard because of social media and spotify plays happening in places you don't go.

Laine, as always, is right on the money. companies flocked to SV because the military industrial complex had already gathered all the engineers, technology, and money there. A bunch of dudes in garages didn't build the infrastructure that made SV such a brilliant lab for developing new technology.

after annihilating a few lakes so I could set up all the scripts I now have Bookorbit ingesting all my libro.fm and libby books and syncing across my Kobo, xteink readers and iPhone. and it shouldn’t be so hard to just read books without Amazon or someone else controlling the whole stack.

the NYT’s Best TV shows list is like that one super pretentious friend who reads about TV and rarely actually watches it. just 50% mediocre awards bait. millennial ass grey of lists. we have more television than we’ve ever had and it was reduced to this???

My mom, who has dementia, was watching a PBS documentary yesterday about NYC during early COVID and asked if I'd lived there during that time and when I recounted my experiences in a rush we both learned that apparently COVID was super traumatic in NYC! And not nearly enough other places...

Texas politics is weird because I’m constantly getting fundraising texts like DON’T YOU HATE TRANS PEOPLE AND MUSLIMS AND ”ILLEGAL“ IMMIGRANTS. Like woah boy that’s the plan? Just hope everyone is super bigoted and weird?

So happy Cornyn and others noticed what a horrible shitheel Bo French is but fun fact—his racist tweet about students at the UT game? not even the worst thing he’s said THIS YEAR. Terrific primer from February about why Texas might be stuck with him. www.texasmonthly.com/news-politic...

He Wants to Deport 100 Million “Third World Savages.” He May Win Statewide Office in Texas.
He calls his opponents “gay” and “retarded,” and he wants to deport 100 million “third world savages.” Naturally, he’s running for railroad commissioner.

spent a whole afternoon installing a Toto bidet toilet seat and NO REGRETS except not holding the nut when detaching the water hose which required a visit to the hardware store to buy a new fill valve. Why are bidets not standard? I thought we lived in a society!!!!

the way to stop out of control AI is to regulate the humans creating the out of control AI. oh your ai broke containment and caused millions in damage? that’s not an act of God, that’s you not building adequate safeguards.

Lioness is like 40% Zoe Saldaña doing Taylor Sheridan-written rants about how dumb most Americans are. it's super condescending but also like 95% right. and it feels like the most accurate portrayal of the rural Texan mindset I've seen on TV.

80 percent of recipients are single mothers. this is just further punishment of women for not being married and deigning to have lives outside of marriage and the policy is reductive and abhorrent and deeply deeply sexist.

This is the thing! AI is a tool! It's a powerful and useful one! It's just the people deploying it are doing so in the most reckless, greedy and destructive way possible and being shocked everyone isn't hailing the technology as the next iPhone.

Glad all the AIs are down so I can do actual work instead of setting our atmosphere on fire to make my homelab and ubersicht layout look good. but I assume I'll be able to return to setting the world aflame to vibecode a little project later.

Literally behind every single miracle fully automated service, from LLMs to self-driving cars, there's actually a bunch of poorly paid people being taken advantage of by companies with lots of funding and a "fake it til you make it" ethos. The only automated stuff is the beautiful AI app slop.

the number of times i’ve had to explain to people the JKR stuff isn’t a “separate the art from the artist” thing because she’s repeatedly used her money to harm trans people is shockingly high. like in the US her transphobia is well known unless you’re very online.

This is the one good thing about a super rural restaurant. You walk in and see the former menu and know you're gonna have a good time--or at least interesting. You see the latter and you know you're getting dinner by Sysco with a dash of TikTok trends from five years ago.

Part of the statement from the Hood County, Texas constable (that's where I live!) explaining why Hood County has ended it's relationship and covered up all of the Flock cameras in the county. There were only three, and this decision was made back in April, but hell yes.
An image of a clip from a Facebook post. It says "I’ve also seen some discussion suggesting that I am opposed to law-enforcement technology. I’m not.
I spent 20 years as a Houston police officer and sergeant. I know that technology can help officers find stolen cars, locate dangerous suspects, find missing people and solve serious crimes. There is absolutely a legitimate place for technology in policing.
But there is a difference between using technology to investigate a crime and building a network capable of keeping a searchable record of where ordinary people travel.
One camera reading a license plate at one location is one thing.
Thousands of interconnected cameras that can be searched to determine where a vehicle has been over time is something else entirely.
That’s where I have a problem.
When government has the ability to collect, search and share information about the movements of people who aren’t suspected of committing a crime, I believe that raises serious Fourth Amendment and privacy concerns.
The answer can’t simply be, “Trust us. We won’t misuse it.”"

If you live in or around Fort Worth and you ever visit the Fort Worth subreddit you know exactly who this guy is. Just a horrible grotesque racist who spews hate and misogyny at every turn and now wants one of the most powerful roles in the state after governor and attorney general.

got pretty disillusioned the last few years as I chased the most popular stuff so I could cover it as a consumer tech journalist. Turns out apps that tells you what to watch and phones that get between you and the world and lots and lots and lots of cool on their face gadgets are bullshit!

I strongly suspect us finance folks are subject to the same collapse of mass popular media the rest of the us population is dealing with. that means they’re likely getting all their info from an echo chamber divorced from the wider world.

so much of news now is terrified to call a spade a spade, and thinks “digging tool” is enough. it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of journalism and it’s killing democracy in the United States.

A way to feel like both an all powerful technogod and an absolute ecological disaster is to get a 3d printer and print out a whole homelab frame and then use claude to help you quickly set up a whole new workflow in docker.

Many data centers being built don't even have confirmed customers? and they're also just giant server rooms. they bring a large increase in jobs during construction and then not after and because many don't even have confirmed customers there's a real chance they could sit empty/unused.

the company that was really good at helping you find information has decided to be the company that lets you fabricate new information and I’m not sure Google realizes how fundamentally different and potentially dangerous that is.

This is a DEEPLY offensive slate and like nearly everything happening at CBS News feels way too similar to what happened to Gawker Media. Just the worst people you know trying to manage a company with zero understanding or real desire to do good. Just swinging egos around and breaking things.

a terrific example of why regulation IS important if, for some reason, the poo poo salad stuff hasn’t convinced folks! companies are not incentivized to do good, they are regulated to do good.

Folks would be surprised how often "people just stopped caring about governance after a bunch of rich people took power" has led to the downfall of republics. like western civilization is really good at this one terrible trick.
