Always love to be reminded of this. A lot of it was hand-stitched too. Really amazing, precise work. Women’s work is so often minimised and forgotten.
Screenshot:

ALSO, it's not just little old ladies sewed the first spacesuits," it's "the women from the Playtex Corp were the only ones who could sew within the tolerances needed." Yes, THAT Playtex Corp, the one who makes bras.
Bra-makers sent us to the moon.
And the cool thing with them was that they did it all WITHOUT PINS, WITHOUT SEAM RIPPING and in ONE TRY. You couldn't use pins or re-sew seams because the spacesuits had to be airtight, so any additional holes in them were NO GOOD. They were also sewing to some STUPID tight tolerances-in our costume shop if you're within an eighth of an inch of being on the line, you're usually good. The Playtex ladies were working on tolerances of 1/32nd of an inch. 1/32nd. AND IN 21 LAYERS OF FABRIC.

This book is the first complete list of the women professional seafarers in the United Kingdom’s Merchant Navy who lost their lives due to enemy action. Detailed profiles have been researched for those women who were Scottish, bringing their stories to light for the first time.
Most names on public war memorials are military men’s names, with a very few for Merchant Navy seafarers. Among the Merchant Navy seafarers who sailed voyage after voyage, knowing that each one might be their last as so many ships were sunk by enemy action, were a few women.
Former seafarer, Nina Baker, researched this book because she started to wonder who the women might be whose names are in the National Merchant Navy Roll of Honour. At the annual Merchant Navy Memorial Day events, some of these names are read out but she knew nothing about the women and their lives. It turned out that the National Roll was itself incomplete.
Now, for the first time, complete lists of all known Merchant Navy women lost in the two world wars are provided and are enhanced by biographies of the Scottish women who made the final sacrifice. Nearly all have no grave but the sea. This book will be of particular interest to anyone organising a memorial event, whether for MN Memorial Day or for Remembrance Day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
“Merchant seafarers and women who lost their lives in war have been overlooked. I recommend this new addition to maritime history, which movingly makes visible a crucial missing element. It shows how great Scotland’s contribution was, and – intriguingly – reveals the working-class Glasgow backgrounds that shaped so many quiet heroes' working lives.”
Dr Jo Stanley, historian, Blaydes Maritime Centre University of Hull.
