Superintendent Thurmond, you currently have 0.7 percent of the vote in the gubernatorial primary. I doubt Newsom is going to lose sleep about not getting your endorsement. This reform idea isn't new. It isn't a gimmick. www.sacbee.com/news/politic...
Screenshot of a paragraph from the Sacramento Bee story. The paragraph's text includes:

"“I’ve known this governor for a long time. We’ve been allies for a very long time,” Thurmond said. “I know that he’s going to run for president, and on most days he’s somebody that I would support, but this proposal to me is kind of a gimmick. I would say nine out of 10 times I’ll vote for him, but on the 10th day, if he’s putting forward things that I know are a gimmick and will not advance strong educational outcomes, then I’m going to be like, why should I support that?”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is correct: Rahm Emanuel should never be president. Pundits are only going to embarrass themselves—and him (which is the only thing worth watching with Emanuel’s campaign). chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2026…
Screenshot of a portio of a Chicago Sun-Times story about Rahm Emanuel’s presidential campaign.

Here is the text quoted on the image, featuring quotes from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson:

“I have very deep concerns about the former mayor of the city of Chicago. What he did in Chicago — from school closures to privatization to austere budgets,” Johnson said during his monthly appearance on WBEZ-FM’s “Ask the Mayor” program before a live audience.

“There was a boy who was murdered by a police officer and it was covered up,” Johnson added. “That’s disqualifying for me.” Johnson’s cover-up allegation was a reference to the 2014 murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by now-convicted former Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke.

Dashcam video of Van Dyke shooting McDonald 16 times while the teenager was walking away from the officer with a knife in his hand was withheld by the city until a circuit judge ordered the city to release it 14 months after the shooting.”

"By the end of 2024, he was considered something of a kingmaker. He had been an early champion of selecting Senator JD Vance of Ohio as Mr. Trump’s running mate. Several of his biggest donors received positions in the Trump administration, and he was central in rallying support behind embattled cabinet nominees like Pete Hegseth, who was accused of sexual assault after Mr. Trump chose him to be secretary of defense.

He likewise rallied his supporters against Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, who he said was not sufficiently supportive of Mr. Trump. She resigned in early 2024."

It is so important to make sure people are aware of the horrible history that makes some of us uncomfortable with the branding decision here.
Excerpt from Justin Horneker’s Talkin’ Soccer newsletter:

Two, the usage of "Daddy Gang" in the official press release is a problem for a league that is directly born out of the ashes of Dan Borislow's inappropriate behavior at the helm of WPS charter club Magicjack. It's been 14 years since the incident occurred, so it's fair to assume that those working in the NWSL marketing department aren't aware of the foundation that their league is built upon, but it's worth calling out as players beg the league to actually follow up on complaints made to their anonymous reporting hotline.

"I put lipstick on a pig," he said. "I feel a deep sense of remorse that I contributed to presenting Trump in a way that brought him wider attention and made him more appealing than he is." He went on, "I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.

If he were writing "The Art of the Deal" today, Schwartz said, it would be a very different book with a very different title.
Asked what he would call it, he answered, "The Sociopath."

But I was taught that the unelected Senate parliamentarian was the most powerful official who existed when it comes to budget reconciliation. Oh wait. That’s only when Democrats are in the majority. How naive of me.
Image of text from the article. That text is: “The Senate parliamentarian is in charge of interpreting and enforcing those rules, and ordering lawmakers to strip out any provisions that do not comply. With Trump playing the stupid tariff card, Cory Doctorow explains how countries that signed free trade agreements with the USA now have an opportunity to stick it to big tech and help lower tech prices for all users around the world. I hope someone chooses this path. pluralistic.net/2025/03/03/f...
An image of a quote from the Cory Doctorow blog post linked in the post. "But foreigners don't have to tolerate this nonsense. Governments around the world signed up to protect giant American companies from small domestic competitors (from local app stores – for phones, games consoles, and IoT gadgets – to local printer cartridge remanufacturers) on the promise of tariff-free access to US markets. With Trump imposing tariffs will-ye or nill-ye on America's trading partners large and small, there is no reason to go on delivering rents to US Big Tech.

The first country or bloc (hi there, EU!) to do this will have a giant first-mover advantage, and could become a global export powerhouse, dominating the lucrative markets for tools that strike at the highest-margin lines of business of the most profitable companies in the history of the human race. Like Jeff Bezos told the publishers: "your margin is my opportunity"

The Telegraph's Tim Stanley quotes a joke Tony Blair included in his latest book that seems relevant today.
Blair includes a joke, a very good one, that feels accidentally pertinent. Some people die; the Devil appears and asks them, before they settle for Heaven, to take a look at Hell, because it’s not as bad as they’ve heard. They see Hell – “drinking and debauchery” – so ask to be damned. Then they wake up in the real Hell – “cold, miserable and horrible” – and demand to know why it looks nothing like what the Devil showed them. Ah well, says the Devil, “back then I was campaigning.”

It is vital that as many people as possible follow Lesson 1 from @timothysnyder.bsky.social’s On Tyranny: “Do not obey in advance.”
Lesson 1 from On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder: “Do not obey in advance.
Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.”

This Cubs fan was glad to see @craigcalcaterra.bsky.social rip into Jed Hoyer for his insulting sustainability comments. The Cubs should be competing to win, not hoping things turn out okay.
Craig Calcaterra writing in his newsletter about Cubs GM Jed Hoyer’s comments about financial sustainability.

“Whatever the current breed of baseball executive, their media surrogates, and a small core of sabermetrically or ownership-oriented fans want to believe, most fans just want to watch a winner. It doesn't even have to be every year. They just want the GM and everyone who works for him to fucking try harder, to stop hiding behind quant-speak, and to make protecting the billionaire owner’s checkbook less of a priority. This is especially true for the Chicago Cubs who almost literally print money.
Most of us have to approach life in a sustainable manner because if we don’t we’re gonna go broke and be in deep shit. No professional sports team is in that boat and even if some claim otherwise, the Chicago Cubs sure as hell aren’t. So spare me, Jed Hoyer, about your and your ownership group's desire to turn a consistent, predictable profit. That’s not why anyone roots for the Cubs.”

I do enjoy the Walz political origin story. This is from a November 2018 profile in the Mankato Free Press by Robb Murray. www.mankatofreepress.com/news/lifesty...
Screen shot of a portion of a November 8, 2018 Mankato Free Press profile of Tim Walz written by Robb Murray. The screenshot includes this text:

"A few years later, Aug. 4, 2004, President George Bush came to the Mankato area. He was presiding over a rally at a nearby stone quarry. Walz tried to go to that rally, but after some students he was accompanying were disallowed entrance, ostensibly for partisan reasons, Walz objected, and he was also not admitted.

That prompted him to call the newsroom. I picked up the phone.

To this day it’s one of the most memorable phone calls I’ve ever taken as a journalist. Tim was fired up. He believed everyone should be allowed to see their president, regardless of political affiliation. And being told these students weren’t welcomed in this rally, well, that didn’t seem to Walz like an American thing to do."
