Day 1 of this has seen many of the reasons why most of my pension investments are in boring trackers. A nice early rise that tailed away and I’m disappointed even though anything positive is a bonus. I’m just too impatient and micromanagey (sic) to actually do shares properly so I leave them alone.
A graph showing a sharp early rise of 1.8% tailing down to 0.6%

They’re still bitter that Labour isn’t the protest party they wanted, so jumped to give the Greens some Momentum. No interest in actually governing, just protesting for things that wouldn’t be out of place on the far right’s agenda.

TalkTalk is a brand diluter for BT. I don’t get the logic as the customer base is different enough that they’re not complementary brands. The different ethos and culture of the two companies mean that they’re not easy matches for internal integration either. Looks like an advisor driven mess.

Y’see, that last one isn’t true. I’m a lifelong Labour voter but fed up with the Starmer started anti-immigration appeasement stance that Burnham hasn’t rolled back. Tempted to not vote Labour next time. But… I would vote for a Labour Party that had rejoin on their manifesto, and for that alone.

My little bit contributing to unnecessary AI overuse.
An AI generated picture in a Soviet style showing an NHS worker and a logo saying “Clean offices. Healthier workplaces. Better care.”

Expect signs around the office that staff have to rota hoovering and bin emptying among themselves. Senior managers exempt, of course. Putting joy into the workplace one initiative at a time.

A reminder for all of you NHS folk getting unhappy about general practice “access” that most of general practice is seeing 70-80% more appts per 1000 population than equivalent months in 2019. General practice has done its bit, go bother someone else for why your hospitals are struggling.

“What haven’t we done yet to make train travel generally unappealing?” “We’ve not done bedbugs yet” “Bedbugs?! Really? That’s a bit specific, but definitely something new, go for it.” www.bbc.com/news/article...

Southeastern trains cancelled after bedbugs found on board
Southeastern said the insects were discovered in drivers' cabs, with the trains removed for cleaning.

If I read a book then hear the audiobook it often jars as I’ve largely already decided on the tone, pace, and pitch of characters’ voices. If I do it the other way then it often adds to the quality of the written book as I can hear the audiobook, if it’s good narration.

When Wes Streeting took over at DHSC, one thing he said was that he wanted to use the private sector to catch up that backlog. He was attacked by all sides for that plan, but I’ve heard nothing better from anyone else. L Too many people go on about fixing it by “efficiencies” that never work.
020
Craig @craig.nikolic.co.uk · 05/10/2026
Absolutely, and on top of that, the backlog from COVID was brutal, with many people who had become very ill because they’d waited too long for what was originally a pretty basic treatment. That then put even more pressure on a NHS that was held together by goodwill and stubbornness.

12 y/o ish (+- a year or so), my uncle left out his copy of Zombie Flesh Eaters when I was staying over. So, my cousins and I watched it when he was out and we were home alone. That’s my main reason and proof for knowing that age categories & restrictions are there for a damn good reason.

This reminded me of the best cinnamon buns I’ve ever had. In Rhodes Old Town, just wandering around and I smelt the mix of fresh baked goods and cinnamon, a bakery did their own. A freshly baked cinnamon bun, Greek coffee, and my book. A peak holiday memory.

I saw part 1 at the cinema, I avoid spoilers wherever possible and didn’t know it was a part 1. Half way through I thought “they’re going to have to speed up to get through the book content”. Near the end I finally accepted it was a “part 1” and it annoyed me so much I haven’t watched part 2 yet.

We make opting out a mandatory task each year for those who have done so, if they don’t do it then we opt them back in after fair warning. The affordability problem is pretty brutal to hear from young folk who see no option but to opt out because of cost of living pressures.

At school, we were shown charts in use in the Caribbean for the “acceptable level of deviation from white” during slavery times. It was brutal and all about racist power and domination. Not sure Braverman has the intelligence or understanding of history to see where her position ultimately leads.

The military sees it as a one-way permanently closed door when people leave. I know friends who’ve compared it to institutionalised prisoners just dumped on the streets on release. This is a key reason for ex-service problems such as homelessness and mental health deterioration.

Anyone who can watch one person take the life of another and not suffer permanent damage to their soul likely didn’t have one to start. To do it in the guise of “justice” is especially damning to the soul.

The reason you need serious people who understand the military in charge of Defence is that this is what you risk: An armchair general who thinks testosterone makes a soldier. There are good reasons why roid ragers and testosterone junkies end up as gate guards and unskilled trades in the military.

I like to think of them as rights rather than benefits. Benefits always have wealthy commentators and politicians wanting to cut them. Too many years of experience of seeing that, and you can never appease those wanting yet more cuts.

And given that so much of corporate consultancy is just fancy regurgitation of already existing internal stuff, AI is the perfect for replacing almost the entire corporate consultancy world.

The other part of this story is that these firms are very happy to reduce low and minimum wage jobs with tech for “efficiency” but then get very squeamish when it’s their jobs that could be cut. It’s why the consequences of adaptation of AI in the corporate environment cannot be left to companies.

In the old days, young people entering the workforce had a technological advantage because they had grown up with tools that older generations had to learn later in life. But AI is relatively new to everyone, and judging its performance requires knowledge of the business domain.
