After 18 months in space, these Teledyne (formerly E2V) #CCD detectores are still working great! When we planned the #PUNCH mission we assumed we'd need to carry out quartic-polynomial calibration of the detectors. But the devices are so linear, we don't. 🛰️🔭🧪

Keith just wait till you see our next CME story from PUNCH! This image (from the last one) should give a clue.
A time-evolution plot shows how an Earth-directed CME front evolved enroute to Earth, as seen by the PUNCH mission in June 2025 over a 90° wide field of view. The CME's expansion is far from uniform and shows significant evolution as the CME propagates.

This "should" not be all that surprising, but it's still a nice result. CMEs often start out expanding self-similarly, but they grow so fast their expansion rate exceeds the speed of the fastest MHD waves. After that, the CME is just a collection of smaller clouds, all flying in loose formation.

Every so often I get asked about why I keep the "Dr." in my title. Scientists often don't use our titles at all, to feel egalitarian. That's good – but those who aren't middle-aged white men might need/use the "Dr." to be recognized in posts. Normalizing that helps all scientists to stand together.

PUNCH/WFI Spacecraft 1:5 model from BrickLink
This is a 1:5 scale model of a real operating "smallsat" spacecraft, part of the PUNCH mission being flown by everyone's favorite space agency (who can't be named here, due to moderation rules).  It was designed by members of the actual mission development team, and is part of the PUNCH outreach program.  PUNCH stands for "Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere". It is a mission to understand the origins of "space weather", which is a real thing that affects our planet.PUNCH has three "Wide Field Imager" (WFI) spacecraft like this one.  The three are in flight right now (as of July 2026) and they photograph our entire inner solar system once every few minutes.  The kit is 1157 pieces and includes all major flight subsystems of the spacecraft, showing how they fit together to make a complete working observatory in space.   The instruction manual  includes 14 pages of notes on the mission, the spacecraft, the individual subsystems, and how they all work together.Recommended for ages 10+, especially young engineers! This version, v1r6, includes some minor adjustments to the previously-approved v1r5: (a) design tweaks from test builds; (b)  a note (p. 4) on how the four spacecraft work together.

Spotted this #EV prototype at the top of #PikesPeak on Monday. It's an interesting body design, reminiscent of chopped-top, chunky refits of 1940s classics. Looks like it can't decide whether to be an SUV, a station wagon, or a hatchback.
Two images of a black-and-white dazzle camoflage EV prototype, spotted at the top of Pike's Peak on June 13th. It is a hybrid design, not quite a hatchback/station-wagon, not quite an SUV. Brand is obscured (of course) but the license plate says "Michigan".

The last two lines of your intro are a 180° rotation about your yaw axis. If you abbreviate "down" as "dn" then Lines 3 and 4 of your intro are also about a 180° rotation about your roll axis.

🤣 "Absorption lines" are dark features caused by materials in the outer part of the Sun's atmosphere. The materials absorb particular colors of light before it escapes the Sun. They're called "lines" because in a rainbow swatch of colors, particular colors form lines across the rainbow.
110
Dr. Craig DeForest ☀️ @craig.deforest.org · 31/05/2026
🤣 "F lines" are "absorption lines" discovered by Fraunhofer (a 19th century physicist): colors missing from sunlight. They're due to particular chemical elements, and show that the Sun is made of the same elements found on Earth. They're the broad dark lines in the visible part of that spectrum.

(Famously, getting energy from 6000K at the surface up to 2,000,000K in the corona is hard, since it would seem to violate the first law of thermodynamics -- but the convection makes the outer layers of the Sun into a humongous heat engine, so the energy transfer isn't strictly thermal.)
150
Dr. Craig DeForest ☀️ @craig.deforest.org · 21/05/2026
Haha! Yes, the granules are also energizing the corona, in the form of high-quality mechanical work (from the bulk kinetic energy). The exact mechanism is still being studied, but it certainly involves magnetic reconnection in "small" (Mm scale) events, and also the intense dynamics of that region.
240
Dr. Craig DeForest ☀️ @craig.deforest.org · 21/05/2026
It’s convection in action. The granules are bright and hot because that material just arrived at the surface from below. The lanes are cooler and darker because that material has been at the surface a few minutes and is now sinking. The flow is several km/sec and turnover takes about 3-7 minutes.
