Another one of those what-if-it-happened-in-another-country moments: The president is suing the government for $100 million dollars for searching his home for the classified documents he stole, and the attorney who represented him on those charges is currently leading the Justice Department.

Hey, I'm quoted today in Minho Kim's New York Times piece on what's in the Save America Act, which is being promoted for its voter-ID and citizenship-ID requirements but contains a bunch of less-scrutinized provisions as well. /1
Screenshot from NYT reads, "Those opposed to the bill have warned that requiring states to turn over their voter rolls could hand the Trump administration data it could distort to claim widespread fraud, by pointing to what could be benign irregularities such as duplicate registration of a voter who moved to a different state or inconsistencies brought about by name changes.

Walter Olson, a senior fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute, a Washington-based think tank, called the provision “a terribly drafted mess” that centralizes “voter screening in appointees of the president.”

Reporting was contributed by Carl Hulse, Annie Karni, Devlin Barrett, Alexandra Berzon and Nick Corasaniti.

Reminder: For 313 days, three Trump-appointed judges have stopped Judge Boasberg from probing possible criminal contempt of his turn-the-planes-around order of last March—conduct implicating, among others, Secy Noem, Judge Bove, DAG Blanche, and, maybe, higher officials.
HOW 3 TRUMP-APPOINTED JUDGES HAVE STOPPED JUDGE
BOASBERG FROM PROBING POSSIBLE CRIMINAL CONTEMPT
FOR 10 MONTHS
Apr 16 Judge Boasberg finds probable cause to believe
criminal contempt was committed, but gives govt a
chance to “purge” the contempt
Apr 17 Govt petitions for stay and mandamus (a type of
emergency appeal)
Apr 18 Trump-appointed Judges Katsas & Rao impose
an “administrative” stay. Judge Pillard dissents. Such
stays, which provide no reasoning & are unappealable,
are only supposed to last a week or so, if that. But this
one lasts 112 days.
Jun 24 Former DOJ atty Erez Reuveni unveils
whistleblower letter alleging that on 3/14/25 then
Principal Asst DAG Emil Bove told DOJ attys they might
have to say “fuck you” to judges—the day before DOJ &
DHS failed to follow Boasberg’s order to turn CECOTbound
planes around.
Aug 8 Katsas & Rao each grant mandamus, though
neither joins the other’s theory. Pillard dissents.
Aug 29 Same panel stays its own ruling and reinstates
the administrative stay pending resolution of petition for
rehearing en banc.
Nov 14 Petition for rehearing is denied, but administrative stay
is dissolved. Six of 11 judges explain, in statements,
that Boasberg can resume fact-finding for possible
contempt because changes on the ground have
rendered Rao’s theory of mandamus inoperative.
Dec 8 Judge Boasberg sets evidentiary hearing on
contempt for Dec. 15
Dec 12 Govt petitions for second mandamus
Dec 12 New administrative stay entered by Trumpappointed
Judges Rao & Walker. Judge Childs dissents.
2026
Feb 24 [Second administrative stay now in ehect for 74
days. Total delay since April 18: 312 days, or about 10
months]

‘One officer told me that I "had no chance of returning to Minnesota" and that "the best thing for (me] is self-deportation." … She offered me $2600 to self-deport. I refused. I wanted to talk to my attorney. They didn't tell me the judge had already ordered my release and return to Minnesota.’
…
25. This Cibola jail was horrible. It was cramped. I was chained up again.
The officers mocked
me and called me their enemy. They laughed at me. I was kept at the jail for what felt like around three hours. I wasn't given an explanation for why I was there.
26. Security
guards then put me on a bus. I think it was around January 27.
No one said
anything about where I was going. I was handcuffed. It felt like the middle of the night. It was freezing cold in the bus because the driver had the AC on. We had no jackets. The bus eventually took me back to El Paso in the carly morning of Tuesday, January 27th.
27. I was put in a cold cell where I had to sleep on the bare cement floor. Around 10 in the morning my cellmate asked to speak to an ICE officer. Three officers came into the cell so I had a chance to speak to them too. One officer told me that I "had no chance of returning to Minnesota" and that "the best thing for (me] is self-deportation." She told me that if I fought my case, I would spend two to three more months here in El Paso. She offered me $2600 to self-deport. I refused. I wanted to talk to my attorney. They didn't tell me the judge had already ordered my release and return to Minnesota. If I hadn't managed to talk to my attorney who told me a while back that I was ordered released. I might have given up at this point and signed the self-deportation forms because the conditions were so unbearable.
…
30. When I was taken back to the detention center from the airport, after missing the flight, I overheard an ICE officer saying in English, "the judge in Minnesota wants this one back." I was put in a cold jail cell again until early next morning (January 28). But again no one had told me directly that a judge had ordered my release
…
32. When I arrived in Minneapolis, I was handed off to ICE
… I had to sign lots of papers saying that I wasn't going to be a part of any "groups." I didn't know what they meant by "groups." They never told me why I was detained

The investigation of Alex Pretti's death remains under the control of the department that 1) killed him and 2) repeatedly lied about the circumstances of his death. This is absolutely unacceptable and should be treated as a cover-up unless independent agencies, e.g. from Minnesota, are brought in.

"Lever de terre" sur la lune. Photo prise le 24 décembre 1968 par Bill Anders, et montrant la terre semblant se lever derrière l'horizon lunaire. Ce phénomène n'est visible que par quelqu'un en orbite autour de l'astre. A cause de la rotation synchrone de la lune, qui montre toujours la même face vers la terre, on ne voit pas la terre se lever ou se coucher depuis la surface de la lune.
