Can investigators still figure out who owns a shell company? Of course. But now you are back to subpoenas, bank records, state filings, registered agents and tracing one entity into another. They did not eliminate shell companies. They eliminated a federal ownership trail.

Now a company formed in the U.S. is exempt from that reporting. FinCEN also says it will delete information it reasonably believes belongs to U.S. persons, including beneficial owners, company applicants and people who obtained FinCEN IDs.

This was not a public list of business owners. The database was for authorized law enforcement, national-security investigators, Treasury and certain financial institutions. It was a way to get from “ABC Holdings LLC” to the actual human behind it.

9. The lesson of 2024 is not that voters failed to understand the Democratic message. The lesson is that voters understood enough to stop believing it. Any report that cannot face that directly is not an autopsy. It is another performance of accountability.
