Got both novavax and flu shot today, and in the same arm (to keep one un-sore). Anticipating a rough night, but hoping for the best. (Edited 3:52 PM)

In the aftermath of the Cornell rape case, @espiers.bsky.social reflects on her own experiences with sexual assault, and how our current models of consent-based sex education may not be enough.

My Rape, the Cornell Case—and Why We Need Better Approaches to Teaching How Consent Works

“Hi Chris ,
Thank you for raising these questions and your enthusiasm about Slate. Privacy is something we take seriously, and we want to be straightforward with you.

1. Telemetry and Data Sharing

The Slate truck does not have a built-in wireless connection (cellular or Wi-Fi) that transmits data back to Slate or any third party. We do not have access to your vehicle's operation data, location, or any other telemetry unless you choose to manually share it with us. Your driving data stays with you.

2. Driver-Monitoring Features

The Slate truck does not include any driver-monitoring features such as interior cameras or microphones.

We believe strongly in the privacy of our customers and have made deliberate choices in how we design and build our vehicles to reflect that. You should feel confident that choosing Slate means you are not paying for your own surveillance.

If you have any additional questions, we are happy to help!

The one I designed using the configurator on their website:

White four-door SUV with blue stripe and black wheels on a white background. Text: SLATE.

Yeah if I were younger and still roadtripping all over the west I might hold out for more range, more size. But for my actual, on-the-ground lived life right now it’s pretty much perfect. I can get from home to the farthest destination I’m likely to need to go to and back within its stated range.

One reason I’m eagerly awaiting a @slateauto.bsky.social EV truck sometime (hopefully) next year is that they claim their vehicle won’t do this: no cameras, microphones, cell connection, nav system. Can’t share data the vehicle doesn’t collect or generate.

OK, this was meant to be this, before autocorrect interfered. bsky.app/profile/cpm5280.bsky.socia…

S3E6 of Dead City is so much fun. Just when I think Walking Dead can’t surprise me.

If you read this as "yet you live in society," I urge you to pause, reflect for a little longer, and generally do those important intellectual tasks that techbros don't want you to do. 'Cause Josh isn't simping for capital here, he's reflecting on how powerfully sneaky it is.

The hatred men have for women in this country is out of this world. And everyone sees it but them. Smh. Absurd. These tools aren’t lonely enough.

Starting a rewatch of The Expanse. Remains a triumph of science fiction storytelling, an amazing achievement. Books are great, show is great.

I’ve been rewatching Halt and Catch Fire. There’s a key scene where Lee Pace’s character says “Computers aren’t the thing, they’re the thing that leads to the thing!” When I first watched it, it seemed like a great insight (the internet being The Thing); now it seems like dismal prognostication.

A sense of powerlessness seems pervasive.

Dire times. It does seem like communication with the extended body of former students, grads, former members of the community is a possible tool to bring to bear, untapped.

I feel so spoiled having been able to take undergrad classes in the GEOL dept there. An embarrassment of riches right out the window, and fantastic folks on the faculty. APS and PHYS, too.

There are natural tar seeps here, unrelated to any oil spill. The city of Carpinteria just north of Ventura is so-named because the Spanish missionaries found it used by Chumash Indians to build boats, using the natural tar (still seen today) as sealant.

Looking at USGS’ V1 cam on Kilauea trying to estimate scale from the behavior of flames at the top of the cone in the center of view. Think the cone maybe 6-9m tall?

Rewatching Halt and Catch FIre. An absolute gem of a show, all-timer. Mackenzie Davis and Lee Pace are and everyone else in the cast are just fantastic. Especially good if you’re old enough to have lived through that era.

Actually this is a year old, so add the current season of SNW to that total runtime. www.reddit.com/r/startrek/comments/…

1. There is so much Star Trek that you could sit down and start watching and not be done for 707 hours 2. There is not enough Star Trek

Star Trek isn’t just a setting to tell your non-Trek stories in. It’s not window dressing. There’s a point to it, an ethos, a history. Wrapping your action movie/crime movie/chase movie in Star Trek packaging doesn’t make what you’ve produced Star Trek.

030

Will reserve judgement for now but this does not bode well. If I were in charge of Star Trek I’d only hire people who 1) love and respect and admire Star Trek, and who 2) have seen every minute of Star Trek ever produced multiple times so they have some hope of knowing what the fuck they’re doing.

Same, 20MB. “Apple Sider” for Apple IIgs. Made a slow groaning sound as it spun up to speed.

Apple sent me a questionnaire to fill out about my new phone. I usually delete these things but this time, hoping for an opportunity to blast the AI features, filled it out. To my great satisfaction I had the opportunity to let them know exactly what I think of AI & Siri.

The @skeetsapp.com client does automated ALT text descriptions of images, and while I always have to edit it a little for intent and clarity and correction, it does make the task a bit easier.

My first “online” was 300bps over analog phone lines talking to BBS message boards and it ruled.

yeah my phone can pull 1800Mbps on wifi7 through the air while I sit on the couch in front of the TV and it’s clear that the quality of the internet has declined as speeds have increased

I wish that I could just “slot in” various skills, like inserting an SD card. Things I’d like to add: Piano, guitar, lute, mandolin, jazz sax, Italian, French, folding fitted sheets cleanly

OKAY BLUESKY CAT PEOPLE: Show me your cat’s FAVORITE TOYS, the ones they adore or lovingly destroy or cannot live without! To get us started:

A hand holds a partially destroyed brown mouse cat toy near other toys. A pink toy with a fish shape and a white fluffy toy are also present.

And that’s part of where customer loyalty comes from.

It’s more expensive than a lot of the competition, but I’ve always found it to hold up to literally anything I’ve thrown at it (and that’s been a lot over the years). Suspect they’ll be good about it.

Bummer. I’ve always had *stellar* experiences with their gear, and I hope that they handle this the way we’d hope.
