Some indie bookstores also carry the book! I think the recommended way to buy it outside of the US is using Biblio: biblio.es/libro/rails-... I also asked my editor, maybe there are more options.

In Barcelona, terraces were *super* full. We were lucky this happened in April, on such a nice sunny day. On the other hand, supermarket shelves were emptied quite fast. In my Mercadona last afternoon there was no bread, no conserves, no water. People went "Walking Dead" mode pretty fast...

In the book there is another chapter about Product Design, and how communication between product and engineering is paramount to build a viable planetary-scale product. I think most experienced engineer have seen how apparently minor product features have *massive* engineering consequences.

It's its own thing. The book is mainly about improving performance, but there is a whole chapter dedicated to "Scaling, beyond performance". It talks mainly about eng org issues.

Completely understandable. I do quite a few interviews, and AI made it very challenging. Before, when a candidate was copying, it was kind of easy to spot: he didn't understand the algo. Now, with LLMs, he will give you the best step-by-step explanation of the algo you have ever heard.

Just released a new version of Rails Scales! (pragprog.com/titles/cprpo...). This one includes the completed book. :) I'm currently working on the last revision, which updates the book from Rails 7 to 8. Mostly minor changes, with the exception that now I will cover Solid Queue.

This is so spot on. Two things: 1. Being focused on producing output the fastest way possible means that you will never prioritize "going deep" 2. Going deep (and down the rabbit hole) is how you learn more: but you need to balance it. Figure out how to do both: it's tricky!

Replace allocations count by GC time in request logs by casperisfine · Pull Request #51770 · rails/rails

Updating my book to Rails 8 (it was written with an example application written in 7) I found an unexpected difference. In Rails 8, the request logs do not show the amount of memory allocations. This was quite useful for the examples of the book. Any way to turn this back on?

There's this evergreen joke on software development that goes something like this: "We're done with 90% of the project. Which means we only have the other 90% left to go." It's funny because it's true. It's also why experienced engineers are in-demand: they are the "finishers." AI tools: not now.

I think we will be releasing the "complete draft" very soon. Before getting to the printed version I think that @pragprog.com will perform another review. Another thing: the repo of the book is currently in Rails 7.1. I will try to update to 8.0 during the next days/weeks. Also, I may dockerize it.

Posts like this make me realize how opinions in software architecture field have changed in the last years. From a software engineer at AirBnB: "a polished monolith would have served us far better than our sprawling service ecosystem. [...]Microservices made our system more complex and brittle."
