Check out our intern Tali's summer project: An accessible guide on #YukonMining review. It dives into where to access information at all stages of a project’s lifetime, as well as how and when you can share your opinion about mining in the territory. ➡️ cpawsyukon.org/mining-process
"Working on this guide reaffirmed how important it is to have plain-language guidance in mining review. What good is public consultation at one point in time, if no one knows what the process looks like in full?" - Tali Pukier, 2025 Summer Intern. We're sad to hear about Jimmy Johnny’s passing and send condolences to friends & family. He took every opportunity to protect the water: “The water is the most powerful thing. It gives us life, it gives us plants, animals... That’s why I’m fighting this.” 📷 First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun's FB

"Condolences from Chief & Council
Chief and Council extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Jimmy Johnny. We hold you in our thoughts and send our support, love, and strength during this difficult time.
Jimmy was raised in the traditional ways of hunting, fishing, and trapping. Despite the hardships of residential school, he carried his knowledge forward.
At 16, he first encountered the Peel Watershed, a place that shaped his life's work. He became one of the territory's most respected hunting guides, sharing a deep connection to the land. His passion for wildlife led to a love of photography, capturing the beauty of the land and animals.
Jimmy was a dedicated protector of the land and water, speaking out for the conservation of the Peel Watershed. "Especially the water," he said, "I want to see it protected. If it wasn't for the water, we wouldn't be here talking to each other." His wisdom, teachings, and commitment to the land will live on in the hearts of those he inspired.
The FNNND Office is closed today (essential services will continue to be provided) and the Dinner & Dialogue tonight will be cancelled until further notice.

🥳 Yukon govt & DFO upheld YESAB's recommendation that the #StonyCreek placer mine NOT go ahead. The project would have diverted 1700 m of vital #water, altering habitats for Chinook #salmon and hunting, fishing, and berry-picking sites. It's good to see community & environment prioritized. #Yukon
Quotes from public comments to YESAB on the proposed Stony Creek mine overlaid on Google Earth satellite image of the creek, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations and Kwanlin Dün First Nation traditional territory.

“We use this water to raise our children, take care of our elders and nurture ourselves. We also collect and rely on this water for our beloved animals and organic vegetable gardens, which helps feed us throughout the long winters.” - Anonymous
"Stony Creek is a salmon bearing creek. I have personally caught salmon fry in a bucket and immediately released them after identifying the fish as chinook salmon." - Troy Friday
“The many negative effects of this project would be felt by several hundred residents, as well as precious wildlife, aquatic resources, heritage resources, vegetation and hiking trails.” - Kathryn Brewster
“Leave Stony Creek alone. It's more valuable than whatever is in the ground.” - Anonymous
