Childhood maltreatment and the developing brain: toward individualized models of psychiatric risk
Childhood maltreatment shapes brain development in ways that vary by adversity type, developmental timing, and genetic vulnerability to psychiatric illness—a heterogeneity that conventional approaches capture poorly. We contend that normative modeling, multivariate methods, and polygenic risk scores offer complementary frameworks for parsing this variability and advancing mechanistic insights and clinical stratification.
