It can be a hack place to start a story from but I like to prewrite how the character's day started; up at 6 with no alarm hitting vs the snoozebar again at 10:15am etc, running on schedule or already behind.

Don't think public intellectuals existed before the CIA entered the magazine business in the Cold War. They are suspect as a class to me esp. the one's I personally like and agrees with.
