Her colorful, energetic, and bluesy style was unique to Janus alone; her powerful voice spoke to the complex intricacies of love, hope, and heartache. Her authentic spirit and her music continues to inspire even decades later. ✌️🫶🕊️

January 19th, 1943 - October 4th, 1970 💔

I hear Janis’ songs, and I immediately think about my grandpa. Especially in the summertime, I miss blasting her CD’s in the car with him at full volume, with the windows rolled down. I miss watching my grandpa drop everything he was doing to give her songs his full attention; mid-Yahtzee game, or in the middle of dinner while the “Golden Oldies” music station played on the television, or while he’d scroll Facebook on the computer with his headphones on. I remember how enamored he was when I even showed him MILEY‘s live performance of Janis’ hit “Maybe” (one of my personal favorites of both Janis and Miley).

This portrait of Janis means so much to me. I originally painted it to be included in my art book, “Rainbow Realm”. This original piece (and my book) are available on my website. 🌈☮️💟

“Thinking about my Uncle Reid today, and his heroic work at Ground Zero in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. How humble he was about sharing his role in all of it. His hard-fought battle with cancer years later.

I remember the absolute gem of a man he was. Some of my favorite memories have been shared with him. I wish there was more time. He lived such a full life – a life full of love. I miss him so much. 🕊️

His message: ‘I’ll always remember. Driving down to Ground Zero, seeing this horrible event, the fire, the smoke, the smell and the sounds will always be with me. I wasn’t a first responder, just a menial communications tech from MCI. But when the towers went down, so did all communications. Police, Firefighters and EMT’s couldn’t communicate with each other or coordinate dispatches to the areas that needed assistance. People trapped in the fallen buildings couldn’t call out on their cell phones since there was no signal. We went unnoticed setting up remote cell towers and reestablishing emergency communications. We all were able to help and would do it again, but yes, sadly, tearfully, I will never forget as I look at some of the pictures I took.’”

I’m so honored to be commissioned for this year’s annual arts festival in Brockport, NY. I designed the OFFICIAL poster (pictured center with its matching 4x6" print). I also created my own commemorative designs to further expand on the celebration of the festival’s 30th anniversary. The designs largely highlight my signature rainbow aesthetics, as well as featuring the town’s historic Erie Canal lift bridge.

Being commissioned for the official poster design is a major highlight of my career thus far, and it was MONTHS in the making. In true Courtney Lee Designs style, I embraced my signature colorful aesthetic and psychedelic vibes.

The festival hosts a diverse group of local artisans in the heart of Brockport’s downtown. The historic Erie Canal lift bridge is a central landmark that connects motorists, boaters, kayakers, cyclists, and pedestrians to our Main Street businesses all year round, but especially during festival weekend. The bridge is THE integral part of this design.

The Brockport Arts Festival is a highly-anticipated annual event that the community always looks forward to; for my art to be cemented in the commemoration of this milestone year is an incredible honor. 🌻💜 Thank you to Kari Pardun, BISCO, the entire festival team, and the Village of Brockport for showing so much love for my work, and for entrusting me with such a monumental project.
