The most important time to defend rights you believe are important is when someone has done something unequivocally wrong.

Thank you for your time and answers!

No, I know, because people are also making those same faux pas back at me, and I am speaking for who gets made collateral damage by the convo. The prescribed actions here have a future tense on some people trying to be artists. So it's important to outline what the procedure here's going to be

I'm getting ratio'd up and down the thread, if I were here for dunks and takes I'm doing a terrible job at it. That's the part I'm really interested in though - "If they did not actively seek it as a career". That's disqualifying? Because includes some of my favourite bands.

I specifically meant as a career, as a means of supporting yourself, which does require those things.

Sincerely asked, these aren't trap questions, I'm trying to read the room; 1) Would it be meaningfully better if he built an audience as large as he did if he didn't monetize it? 2) Is it unethical for convicted felons to become artists? Is the difference the crime, or if you got a sentence?

Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
We can disagree on right to a platform being one of them, and I don't think anyone has a right to an *audience*. I would just prefer people have access to tools for self improvement and enrichment so they're less likely to do that shit again, and being overly restrictive... restricts that. I guess.

I know it's a few hours later but I'm annoyed at my own phrasing here and there's no edit function. I hope I didn't come across as downplaying an awful thing. I only meant there's a tradeoff between rights for offenders and harm to victims,

After trading space babies and running people over with a truck, Strange Scaffold want you to organise a haunted library in Something is Wrong with the Library
"At the time, I didn't immediately think my boss was filling the walls of our place of business with corpses," so opens the reveal trailer for Something is Wrong with the Library, the latest game from the studio that is most hard to pin down genre-wise, Strange Scaffold. Though, considering they've made games about isekaing people, trading space babies on the stock market, and cuck-, I mean, Clickolding, perhaps the way you pin them down is "games for freaks and weirdos." Anyway nearly finished the second draft of my book about a wizard who experiences psychological and body horror beyond mortal comprehension and decides to thug it out, so that's an exciting thing to send to the prereaders

I sincerely am. I get the importance of bringing this up against Geller once it's found out, but it makes her collateral damage whose wishes about the disclosure I don't know and aren't safe for her to explain to me. My heart genuinely goes out to them.

Absolute nightmare situation for them, 100%

You mean the person who didn't make the allegation public, was anonymously named and is now a football so if they do speak up they'll be punted either by defenders or persecutors no matter what their answer is? Yeah my wish was that this probably stayed private for them, too.

Just based on the... "Getting a Youtube channel would retraumatize your victim" stuff

Man, again, I had to go years being scared of seeing people in the supermarket. But it's not viable that they don't buy groceries, or not go out in public, in case I see them. That didn't come with a block feature. So, the answer is probably 'bad'. But this is a thread that pulls in bad directions

Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Oh. Uh. I already said the other thing but... Nah, man. My answer that I'm comfortable with is "When you're not the same person anymore". I did that. Recovery rules. Present risk factor, risk of reoffence, I haven't seen those mentioned, to the point they seem irrelevant to the discussion.

Just want to thank you again for your time and genuine good faith. I only offered myself to be a present example of the broader argument here, to make it less abstract or like I'm defending Geller. I'm not doing that, and eff hypotheticals, right? Continue to love your work, and thanks again

I'm not asking for absolution for stuff a different person did wearing my name and skin ten years ago. I'm just trying to make it clear what the stakes are, what's being prescribed. Like, the fact that it does make you uncomfortable to ask a stranger point blank for this history.

Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Just privately, I've been a minor internet celebrity under a different pseudonym, and I've been a hospital janitor, and only one of those positions warranted a police background check for a reason. You're so right it's genuinely hilarious.

Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The specifics I might be willing to DM you aren't what I'd be willing to put in the thread, and I feel like that's part of the point too. Right?
150
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I am. Like I said, I got groomed, and you have to learn a lot of what you were taught was normal through error. But the right to be able to admit that without having to go into specifics is a right that I would like to keep for myself and others. That's part of the point.
150
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
So it's not a rhetorical question - at what point of success, how many subscribers, does your past like this have to be something you're not allowed to keep private anymore? What's the threshold? Was it always wrong, or only when he hit a subscriber count?

Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But a lot of my friends like that *aspire* to be, and have put in the work to no longer be the people that did those things. But they still did those things - maybe not SA, but bad things. You can't change that you did it, just if you're the same person who did.
460
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Sorry to be clear, I'm not saying you're saying that, but it's in the thread. The first response I had about this was someone linking me the text better known as "Kill Your Local Rapist".
010
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But one friend, who went on to be a therapist, said of my notifications; "Half the time the same people who are like 'he should be flayed alive' are also ones telling actual victims to shut up and their opinions don't matter" It's grim, here
260
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Full sincerity - yeah, which is saying *a lot*, but it's you and Shaun I respected more to begin with, and it seems pretty shared by the art circle of survivors I'm sharing this with on Discord. Really appreciate that you've stayed with me this long by the way.

Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Replying in good faith; Because I've gone on to have a more rich and fulfilling life than the people who hurt me, frankly. It's infantalizing, and it's reductive to us just being victims as a personality that defines the rest of your life, not just as a thing that happened to you.
150
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm also seeing way too many people say things like "Of course the people that go on to do this go on to have careers and never their victims" and like, do you know how offensive that is?
120
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Just to be crystal clear; I don't believe anyone is owed their audience. Boycotts after disclosure are cool and valid. But the forever-crime treatment is also making me uncomfortable because it's framing recovery as superficial, like something you can never heal from either.
320
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Just to explain why I care - This discourse is really fucking up a lot of the people like me, who were groomed, or some of my friends who had a drug history, who specifically found community and recovery only by publishing, and only learned to be better people through it. We're taking splash damage
420
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Plenty of people do those things even when they aren't sustainable - that's not always the point of doing them. What's being established beyond Geller is that there should be a lifetime ban on publishing, so you don't risk having a platform one day.
430
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Again, I'd put it like this; This starts as posting amateur content to an amateur platform that got successful over time. Was it ever unethical to publish on the chance he became successful, or did it retroactively become unethical when he reached a subscriber count?
760
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I mean, I lived that. But those were people still doing harm, in a present tense, and that's not what's being said here. Art's also healing, and this is stuff posted to an amateur platform that got big over time. Was that ever okay, or was it only after he crossed a subscriber count?
150
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm a fan of yours, not his. But I watch A Guide To Flaming Out and how important making your art was for you, as my art is to me, and I don't know what someone's supposed to do when they get successful if they pursued art therapeutically after having done something terrible.
5100
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm not even a Geller fan, I obviously agree increased skepticism is deserved here. But at some point this devolves into saying anyone who's ever done anything terrible shouldn't pursue art - which is healing - because they risk one day getting successful from it and having social power
8120
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm not being rhetorical here - It's hurting a lot to see people I admire a lot come out with the opinion that they believe change isn't meaningful unless it comes with a minimum amount of externally inflicted suffering. Do you want punishment because it's necessary, or because you want punishment?
8161
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I don't think you can whoopsie away from it, but jesus christ, as someone who's actually experienced this I want to believe that the people who did it are capable of becoming people who'd never do it again and be ashamed of their actions without needing to be brutal about it. What do you want?
6110
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I dunno man, even if what he did was horrific, I don't think having to deal with thousands of people flooding his comments telling him to kill himself, or death threats, would make the situation better for anyone either. And I'm seeing a lot of that.

Friend of mine works in women's domestic violence public service, and they say one of the things they're trying to work out is that lesbian abusers seek them out first so they can't represent their partners due to conflict of interest. There's kafka shit in this

Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's so uncomfortable being an actual victim of this, because it's one of the most horrible things that's happened to me, but it sets me up as a strawman for horrible people. And I'm a survivor on top of it! Like, I understand the problem! This one cut me off from my support networks, though.
150
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I'm not saying this about him specifically, but I'm catching a lot of strays in how it's being argued.
040
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Re; the Geller stuff: As a survivor, I have to believe someone doesn't have to be the worst things they've done as part of believing someone isn't the worst things that were done to them. Otherwise the ideas of growth and change is superficial, and recovery isn't a meaningful concept.
241
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This kind of read like a justification for antagonizing me, here, and it's made me immeasurably sad, so I'm going to go do literally anything else now.
100
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
You're like 10 replies deep into arguing against the concept of rehabilitation and recovery to someone who opened with 'I'm a survivor and it makes me uncomfortable'. Which is fine, you're allowed, I'm replying every time. But you're putting moral righteousness over not doing harm, here.
110
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I'd have said 'exclusively' but character limits. But, yeah, again, that eternal damnation view of others fucks with your own ability for self-criticism and recovery. It also brings you back to a purely retributive model of justice. It's soul poison.
100
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Is it likely? No. Do I gotta believe it's possible? Yeah. At some point I feel like judging, say, a sixty year old man for a fucked up thing he did when he was twenty is self-defeating. The worse the thing the longer the timescale and greater the effort, obviously.
100
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I have to believe someone doesn't have to be the worst things they've done as part of believing someone isn't the worst things that were done to them. Otherwise growth and change are just superficial. You make me really uncomfortable how you wield the present tense, here, for that.
110
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
No. I don't have a conflict of interest in that regard. Maybe if I'd been unconscious myself, the times it happened to me, I might be less sympathetic. I can't know, so I'll have to stand by my position.
100
Junta S Thompson @countnumbers.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
As a survivor; Over a long enough time scale? Yeah, sure, why not? I believe recovery is possible. I gotta believe that about other people to believe that about myself.
