A one page piece I did for an art show once and it was all so fast that it never got scanned. My partner at the time must have seen it and had feelings haha. More How to Rest next month...!
A drawing with elements of acrylic and watercolor painting depicting a hand holding a simple glass of water. Handwritten text appears around the glass and hand, each line spaced out from each other. It reads: how do you, speak of me, to your friends, who I am never up to seeing. And then below the cup, it continues: how much of me is, created, when I am not around. The fingers distort a little as they are seen through the water, and strokes of light paint move out from the central drawing as if all else falls out of vision except the contemplation of glass and water.

part 42 of 47 “Sketchbook Comic: Book 3” is my personal sketchbook, where I juxtapose my art with writing about my experiences as a non-binary, chronically ill person. re-releasing this in advance of a print run! read the rest on my website, or support my patreon - links in bio!
In this section, figure drawings seem to split apart into strands or ribbons. We see fingers split apart into waving lines like grass. A torso a neck turning into sharp, long shapes. Writing starts: like is there even a state of being, where, I get to be okay? Is there an ideal state. The ribbons seem to stand in front of a chest, where a head would be. Feet leading up to legs that split apart into strands. Text continues: bleh, sounds so much like whining. Whatever, whatever.A hand that is full, that isn’t being split apart at all. And then just many strands of white and gray where the hand was. Writing concludes: maybe life just is compromise, maybe that is fine.

This month has a zine about writhing about in bed! Rest mode, or just bad day mode. The days you want to forget about. But maybe there’s a wisdom in them too? Get a copy on my patreon $20 tier (or $1 discounted slots, while they are still there).
A color zine has been laid out on a patch of concrete that shows many different repairs and colorations. At the top it says the artists name, kimball anderson. And below a nude self portrait from above of them lying down. Their knees are drawn in a bit, and one arm holds up their head while the other covers their face. The drawing is sketchy and vibrantly colored, and the background is a chaotic dark expanse. At the bottom in multicolored text it says: writhing. The zine is open to two pages, both containing a self portrait and multi-colored text. The first one the figure is lying on their stomach, rubbing their face into an unseen pillow. The writing says: no just go, have fun, it is fine. The second page the figure is on their back, knee up and arms behind the head. The pose would be revealing if not for the vague sketchy style that washes out the detail on their body, and makes their face almost formless. Writing reads: I feel, I feel. Two pages of the zine, but these two are mainly white text with no art. On a grainy dark surface, a paragraph of text reads: In that self that just writhes miserably in bed, sometimes there is a peace that is so uncommon and precious. Surrender, acceptance, whatever you want to call it. It is something that a lot of us run from our whole lives until we are forced to give in. On the next page it says: it is easy to forget how important it is. Back to another set of two pages open on the concrete. On the left page, they are almost culred up in a ball on their side, hands over face. The writing says: it, uhh, it, um. On the right, a twisted body, legs lying on their side, face rubbing up into the invisible pillow. Text continues: no sorry, I do not know, sorry.

In this section amorphous green figures are covered with sickly green and slashed with red. A figure stands and looks at us, with a strange soft body and eyeless face. It stands flimsily on the ground beneath it. Text starts: nothing, exposed to the world, no coping mechanisms, no way to manage. This strange being with an almost impossible to parse face, with red lines like small cuts. A weak and tired hand. Writing continues: authentic and true, weak and strong, pure. Ugh, purity, whatever. It holds itself up off the ground with pained arms. It curls in on itself. Text concludes: wash everything I am away, and I will stand there, neutral and destroyed.

In this section, as in an earlier section, there are drawings that seem partially erased by a white cloud. This time it’s detailed hands disappearing. Hands held out like when you look down at your own hands. Text starts: wash it all away, all of my sickness, all of my life.Close ups on the hands, the nail beds, the creases at the bend in the fingers. Text concludes: and I will stand here, and I will be, nothing.

And these ones all together! I was experimenting with which markers to use on this page so there's a lot more variety in the colors and the lines. This whole series always makes me happy so I'm glad to get to share it with more people now!
4 drawings of Ruby together on one page in a variety of cool tones with yellow accents. In the first, she holds up the skirt and moves the soft ribbed texture across her stomach. In the second she flutters the skirt more and shows a lot of leg. The last two are smaller and simpler: Ruby twists her torso while raising the skirt, then holds it up in front of her chest with one leg pointed elegantly on toetip.

This is how they look on the page! These two are a matching set, drawn with the same blue ball-point and shaded with light blue, dark blue, magenta, and a touch of red on the hair. Plus a fair amount of white paint-pen touch ups on the glasses and dress folds.
The two matching magenta and light blue drawings of Ruby side by side. On the left, she holds the skirt of the dress out from her body, and pn the right, she prances while twirling the skirt around her. The background light source is suggested with faint cyan shadows scribbled on the ground.

In the original photos, she's actually wearing a light yellow dress with a dramatic spotlight behind her. Since most of my yellow markers had dried up I had fun with exaggerating the cooler colors and the contrast of the shadows.
A smaller Ruby drawing, where she twists while holding out the skirt with a dreamy expression. It's lined with thick dark purple marker strokes and her skin is lavender. 2nd smaller Ruby drawing holding up her skirt with one foot on toe-tip, where the yellow back lighting is very prominent. It's all lined in thick blue marker.

Did all these with a combo of felt-tip markers, alcohol based markers, blue ball-point pen, and white paint-pen on top on plain ol' printer paper.
Ruby glancing away from the viewer thoughtfully, her head surrounded by stray test scribbles. She moves the soft ribbed texture of the skirt across her stomach, magenta light and blue shadows dancing folds in tiny scribbly strokes. Yellow light catches in the dress where it is held away from her body.Ruby drawing in magentas and blues, where she holds the skirt away from her body while staring off into the distance mysteriously. Lots of white paint pen marks accent the dress folds as well her glasses and face. Her lower body is a dark blue shadow beneath the dress.

She's smiling and holding out the edges of her skirt in a charming curtsy as she twists and shimmies.Close-up drawing of Ruby, now smiling playfully at the viewer and pulling up her skirt daintily. She is mostly lavender shades with cyan shadows and intense yellow from the light source behind her.

The two colors of dots connect again, and invade each other’s territory just a little. Still they try to hold on to their shape. Text continues: I spent so much time like, figuring out how to be a normal person who does dishes. But like, so what? There are now only a few dots left, and they split away with their colors, and move off in different directions from each other. Text concludes: it is all only sort of impressive, if, I am sick, you know?

In this section, small gray and white marks collect in abstract constellations. They seem like they are in a chaotic dance with each other. Text starts: if I became well, suddenly my hard won accomplishments, would be so small.Speckles crowd more and more into the panels, until they fill every part with a torrent of activity. Writing continues: oh, are you an analytical type? Well, nothing on your resume says that, so.The specks start to look like a crowd gathered in a circle around something, like a rapt crowd from afar. The text says: not like my art really ever made me money. Not like my writing ever really took off.The white and gray specks separate now, and spiral around each other in shapes like a murmuration of birds. Writing reads: no real schooling to my name, no job experience.

Just want to note that if you want to print your own copy, the files will work on a home printer! But they use a good amount of ink so heads up. I'd recommend using a photocopier if you have access to one (check local libraries as well as commercial printers) - it'll probably look nicer & cost less.

Look how beautiful @cerealeatingskull.bsky.social's hand-lettering came out...! And the tiny Eiffel tower! Also, now you can enjoy my favorite character, Baby Who Loves Not Having COVID....en français.
The title page for Pourquoi Porter Un Masque, crediting the Translation Team of Eli, Neptune, Jibe, and Alex next to a little drawing of the Eiffel Tower. It's starring me, Laurel, depicted hiding in my house from a huge SARS-CoV-2 viron while sweating bullets. It's also a Handy Guide For Surviving COVID-19 together.French-translated page saying COVID-19 is an airbourne illness over an illustration of a person sneezing out a 6 meter wide plume of hand-labeled respiratory particles. The biggest and heaviest visible droplets fly out of their nose and mouth and land close by. French translated page about layered protection methods, visualized by slices of Swiss cheese protecting a baby that says it loves not having COVID. The layers include limiting exposure, masking, air filtration, quarantining when exposed, and vaccines. There's a little bit of the protestor illustration on the next page with hand-lettered signs.

Two small birds stretch their wings out mid-flap, each feather tip distinct and vital to pushing themselves upward. Text continues: everything in my life would change. There would be no use for health management. I would probably be overwhelmed by work and the need for work. I would not have the time I had for friends.A flapping gull, a soaring sparrow. The text concludes: not that it is impossible to live a healthy persons life, but. I do not know how to do it. Everything would change.

In this section the panels are filled with realistic drawings of birds in flight. On this page, they are hawks with wide wings speckled black and white. We see one soaring, and another turning. The writing starts: I have built a life here though, in the illness. Built parts of myself I am proud of.Smaller birds are on this page, birds with wings up at the apex of their flap. Text continues: all of this self I have built for health management, for analysis, for understanding and reacting to the tiny sensations, that warn of health concerns. One tall panel stretches from the top to bottom of the page, with a drawing of a seagull mid-turn with almost vertical wings. Text says: all of the art I have made, and the friends I have, bonds I have made. Two speckled birds fly in the panels on this page: a small bird seemingly in the midst of taking off, and a falcon coming in for a landing. The writing reads: if I got well, what use would that all have, that would all wash away with it, right?

With the specter of darker things around the edges, writing reads: Sometime you will get to 100, and you will say, ready or not, here I come. Two large shapes sit in a panel that fills the page, hanging up at the top of the panel with a glow behind them. Text concludes: But right now, the truths of the world hurry to hide away from you.Glimmering shapes float above a hatched pattern that fades off to a light gray. Text at the bottom says: A guide to the practical and emotional realities of getting good rest, and a story about how messy the process can look.

Darker hatching gives a sense of underlying tension that was absent on all of these soft gray panels. Text says: You ask yourself, how am I supposed to live this life.A glow of light seems to move through the background, and then it gives way again to the harsh dark parallel lines. The text continues: And what you really mean is, how can I accept this unacceptable state of being.A single large panel is filled with glowing white hatch marks, and they bring a sense of hope. Writing says: For some reason, an instinct from childhood hits you.The shapes on this page have a graininess to them, like night time photography. These darker shapes float over a light background. Text says: You close your eyes and count to 100. 1, 2, 3…

The background turns a more milky light gray, with hatched lines that that fade in and out. Writing reads: You distract yourself, read or watch something. Just anything you can do to keep your mind occupied. Two gray shapes sit near the top of a large panel, as the empty expanse has a luminescent glow. Writing says: Until that tired feeling overrides the rest.More text on a white page. It says: Here is a place for you to write down your rules. Try to trust your first instincts, before you start hating how limiting they are. Then below are a series of numbers with empty lines for writing on next to them.Another page of only text, which says: Especially as you learn more skills for resting and managing your health, you might want to negotiate with these rules. But nothing you are going to learn is going to be magic. You made these rules for a reason, and the observations you made here are still important. The more you negotiate the rules, the more you risk your health. So even thought they feel mutable, like you could have just arbitrarily written them down differently, try to treat them as absolute.

A white page with text in the middle, which reads: The more you instate cushioning into your life, the more it starts to suggest itself like a set of rules. In my life, it became clear that the safest thing for my health was to not socialize two days in a row. I try to always put a cushion day between. And when I do not, I often go past my limits, so it is obviously a good rule. Taking it from a vague guideline and making it a rule makes me more likely to take it seriously and act within my safe limits. On another white page the writing continues: So look at your health needs. Look at how much time it takes to wear you out, and how much time you need to recover. Pay attention to how much of a cushion you need on either end of an activity or event. And from that, make some rules. Some things you cannot do. Maybe like me you can not do two social activities in two days. Does that mean you can never take a trip to see someone for two or more days? Figure out an answer, even if you do not like it. Maybe your rule will be that you can only do one small walk a week, or that you can only write or draw if you have not used the computer that day. Whatever makes sense for your limits.Gentle grays fill three panels. Text reads: when you wake up the next day, the very act of remembering who you are and what your life is resets you.The shapes on this page feel like brightly dressed people standing in contrast to a gray overcast sky. Text continues: Memories of the dark truths of the previous day are pushed to the corners of your perception.

More gray panels with subtle hatching behind soft gray forms. They read: how long had you denied it, hidden from it, ran from it, from your own body. One panel fills this page, and the dim gray background stands in contrast to the bright light that seems to shine off of the polygons. On top of them it says: How futile it was to fight. Two panels on this page, one with dark lined hatching, and then one with light hatch marks. Text says: You just lie there in the dark with the feelings of your body.A single large panel again. The subtle, alternating hatching in the background gives the feeling of a constantly shifting surface, like the waves on a lake on a calm day. Small gray shapes sit on this large expanse. Text on top reads: You let your consciousness fade.

The light gray of these polygons, these ever shifting geometric shapes, feels light and airy. The text continues: Until you become just the sensation of this state itself. Your tired, depleted body. A large panel fills the page, and there’s something iridescent about the imagery, a shine to the shapes and the glowing lines behind them. Writing says: Your symptoms become your entire reality.Another white page with a paragraph at the center. It says: This practice of setting aside space before and after an activity is called cushioning. Basically just like putting big pillows on either end of activities. And its function is a lot like a pillow: it makes things that might hit you hard hit a little softer. Honestly I would recommend setting up some degree of cushioning for every activity you do. Even if you think it should not be that bad, there is no reason to invite risk into your life if you do not have to. Even an hour of resting on each side of an activity could save you days worth of recovery.Another white page with text. It reads: Write down some activities here, and then estimate how long you will need to rest before and after them. It is natural to want these estimates to be short, but longer is going to make you safer. Write the estimates that make you feel you will be completely fine. The page then has a series of blank spaces after the words activity, rest before, and rest after. The text continues below: it is okay to get this wrong. it is a process to learn your needs.

A white page with a paragraph at its center. It reads: As you start to measure how much one unit of energy is, you can also start to measure how long you need to rest after using a unit of energy. You can start to see an activity not just in terms of how long the activity is, but how long the rest you will need after will be. Being able to see your actions through this lens is essential, because it means that rest becomes not what happens when your plans fall apart, but a part of the plans themselves.More text on a white page. It says: there is also a utility in resting before an activity. I do comics, obviously, and when I used to do comic conventions they were just a monumental cost for me. They are just all talking and sitting upright (which is exhausting in itself when you have POTS) for ten hours or something! I would need to set aside like a month afterwards of pure resting. But I found that if I made sure I was in good condition beforehand, I could maybe make it out of it with just a week of rest after. So I would rest a week before, and rest a week after. Considerably more manageable!More panels with soft gray textures and shapes sliding against each other like they are trying to fit together. Text reads: You blue through the day, half doing things, half just existing. The light in the panels dims a little, like a cloud passing overhead. The writing reads: You just continue. You feel yourself let go. Let go of things you did not even know you held onto.

Soft gray shapes float over the subtly hatched backgrond that seems to alternate between dark and light colored lines. Writing starts: You feel the absolute reality of it. Of your condition, right here and now.Light seems to glint off of the shapes and through the many parallel lines behind them. The writing continues: You lie there, half comfortable, half uneasy. And you see the shape of your life ahead of you. It is just more of this lump on a bed, more of this creature twisting up on itself.A single panel fills this page, and somehow the shapes on this page feel like they are small cowering forms in a giant space. Text says: It is a dark and overwhelming thing to behold.Shapes softly tumble through four panels, as text reads: But for this moment, nothing is ambiguous. There is no reason for doubt. This is you. This is it.

In this small section, faces are drawn but details are left out. We see the shadows around eyes but no eyes or eyelids. We see a faceless head. Sending How to Rest 8 this month! This one is about my own special little theory haha. It’s a play on the thing from pacing called “switching”. Get a copy on my patreon $20 tier (or $1 discounted slots, while they are still there). I’ll catch you up on older issues too!
A zine rests on folds of a seafoam green blanket. The cover has a large panel with light polygonal shapes on a gray background. White lines spread across it and split in a pattern that feels natural somehow. Dark text says: how to rest 8, tactical switching. Below in a blank area, it says kimball anderson.A page from the opened zine. On it, three wide panels show bright polygons on a murky gray background. Lines move across them, seemingly parallel at first and then splitting off in slight variations. Text says: You feel like you are a passenger on a plane that is moving through a cloud. For now everything is darkened and obscured. But you know that at some point you will come out on the other side.A page from the zine that is just plain white with a paragraph of text that says: Two decades ago when I was a teen trying to figure out how my health worked, I had this idea that maybe for each activity there was a perfect opposite. That you could make something like a color wheel where if you wore yourself out, say, walking you just had to do math after. Sometimes it would work, but too often for my liking switching to the opposite activity would make me feel worse. Reflecting on this problem is how I initially came to establish the spoons and forks and knives theory of the last issue. A page held open by pale fingers. On it, writing says: here is a table with my 1-10 scores for 14 activities. It is not comprehensive, but it should give you an idea. Below, a table which has activities going up and down, and energy types going left to right. To get an idea of it, the first activity is art and uses 1 physical, 10 focus, 4 decision, 0 math type, 2 multitask, 1 narrative. Other activities have high scores in different areas, like walking using 10 physical, or video games using 9 decision.

In this section, the view outside a side window of a train. White glare is cast across the landscape, and parallel lines of the aisle lights move through the branches of trees. It seems to be winter, and the leafless branches are loosely shown with the occasional lush evergreen. Text starts: sandcastle life, sandcastle life. Those parallel lines of light, like dashes or dotted lines. Lifeless branches. Text continues: build something today, it can be beautiful, or meager. Just build it.The reflection of a luggage rack looks like the ribs and spinal column of a snake. Trees pass by. The writing says: then let it wash away, and be gone. Let it go.A tree stands in the diffuse white glare. Another spindly one moves by. The text concludes: and build something else tomorrow.

part 36 of 47 “Sketchbook Comic: Book 3” is my personal sketchbook, where I juxtapose my art with writing about my experiences as a non-binary, chronically ill person. re-releasing this in advance of a print run! read the rest on my website, or support my patreon - links in bio!
In this one page section, horizontal lines slash across the face of a figure. The figure holds their chest in pained body language, and then tries to put one hand up to their face. Words read: ugh destroy myself, let go, let all of this go, and become something else. Please.

In this section, parallel lines lead down to little hooks, like many fishing lines. Or perhaps the hooks are more like indents, like hair follicles coming out of pores. The writing starts: if I can create problems in myself like this, out of fear and feeling like, the moth to the flame. In one panel, a light seems to be cast from the hooks, like a shadow. In another, there’s a circle in the middle, like a reflection of the moon in the midst of reeds sticking out of water. Text concludes: then how do I know I didn’t create my illnesses that way?

A paragraph sits on a white half of a page, and below two shadowy shapes sit on a bed of messy squiggles, giving a feeling like closing your eyes when you are overwhelmed. The writing reads: A guide to the practical and emotional realities of getting good rest, and a story about how messy the process can look.

A small paragraph of text sits in the middle of a white page. It says: Now that you have this idea of how much one unit is, probe your intuition using this measurement as a guide.A series of questions as their own paragraphs again. They read: How many units can you use of your most draining activity until you are completely demolished? How many units do other activities take? How many units do you have today? How long does it take to recover one unit through rest? Are there other methods of recovering units? Activities that generate energy or make symptoms recede? You might not know every answer right away, but if you keep watching for those answers they will start to fill in for you. Lighter panels with squiggles that feel more harmonious appear on the panels on this page. The text says: And as that feeling of worn down relief hit your body, something inside of you felt that comfort and ease, and wanted to seize upon it. Make sure it can not get away. Two small panels have text that says: stress courses through you. A desire to control. In a large panel underneath, energetic zig zagging scratches overtake the composition. One last bit of text reads: And you lose your chance.

A heavy feeling starts this page, dark and stagnant. Writing reads: you sigh, and with that sigh you feel the last bit of stubbornness leave your body. In this moment you surrender. On this page, a sense of space appears. Of things clearing away a little. Text continues: And there is a relief in this surrender, in not trying to find an answer or a solution.Everything feels a bit brighter, but also more washed out and dull. The writing says: You had been trying so hard for so long, and every bit of effort just turned on you. Made you more stuck in the mire of your own body. The shapes in this last panel feel surrounded by urgent scribbles.A large panel fills the page with an open feeling to it. Even the background lines feel a little less hectic. Text reads: To simply let your muscles go limp, to finally lose the fight in you, felt good.

A page that gives the feeling of a small light is held to it in the dark. Text reads: And all of your wishes went out into the room with your breath, drowned out by the buzz of electronics at the edge of your perception.A single panel fills this page, with shadows giving way to an insistent light. Writing says: Yearning, determination, and even your frustration seemed to dissipate into nothingness.Another white page with two paragraphs. They read: Now that you have been developing your intuition, you can start applying structures of logic to it. A natural first step is figuring out how to quantify your limits. Start by thinking of an activity you do that you have a lot of experience with since your limits started. It might be cooking, showering, reading, anything that wears you down. You know the experience of doing this well, and you know the cost. Let us call the cost of that activity one unit of your health. You can call it a spoon, one gallon in the engine, one HP, whatever metaphor works for you. But the important thing is that you have a unit of measurement. Two more paragraphs on this white page. They say: When you use that same amount of effort over the same amount of time on another activity, it might have a different cost. You might find that having a conversation wears you out twice as much as the activity you based the measurement on. That means it uses two units then, right? In this way you can start to quantify your intuition. This is how it makes sense in my brain, but if you find it easier to think of it in another way, do it. Just stay internally consistent and it will be useful.

A paragraph of white text sits in the middle of a plain white page. It reads: Once you start to have a sense of various signals and sensations in your body, it is natural to want to understand how it all fits together. Questions might occur to you.On this white page, a series of questions in separate short paragraphs. They read: Is the need for recovery cumulative? Does overextending yourself today mean you have less in you tomorrow? If you pushed too hard again, how much rest would it take to get back to your baseline? Or is there a plateau of just feeling bad you can reach, and further activity does not make it worse? Are there some things that you do not seem to need to rest from, and some where you are more limited? Are there activities that actually make you feel better?Words spill from lonely and disconnected shapes to the background. They say: you wish vaguely for someones hand to hold, for someone to be there with you right now.The shapes feel almost plain and washed out on this page, with frantic lines buzzing underneath like a fly you are trying to ignore. The writing continues: you wish you knew what you were supposed to do, you wish to return to that feeling you used to have, where you knew exactly what you were doing.

Two tall panels fill the page. In the first, layers of shapes like broken pottery are stacked on top of each other. Text on them says: your eyes move from the ceiling, to your phone, to the window. In the second panel, the shapes are only at the bottom, and above them are irregular marks like when you scrape one rock against another to draw. Text says: nothing of note anywhere. The shapes continue in this page’s panels, like scraps of scattered egg shells. Writing reads: When you think about how long you have been like this, it feels like you must be getting it wrong. It must be days, not weeks. It must be weeks, not months. On the geometric forms it says: you feel like nothing has any form. Then the forms split apart from behind the words, leaving the text just sitting on the scribbly background. It says: you try to grasp it, and it slips through your fingers. The writing returns to the shapes that seem to be more and more surrounded by frantic scraped marks and lines. It says: this is not your body, this is not your life.

The front cover of a zine. About half of the page is filled with a panel that holds two shadowy polygonal shapes with scratchy scribbles under them. Below it says: how to rest 5, quantifying. And then in smaller text it says: kimball anderson.
