In 1976 they absolutely would not have cared about fatphobia. Far more likely it was thought it’d be harder to make her sympathetic if she was fat and then when the precedent was set that adaptations didn’t have to keep that every other adaptation followed suit.

Since I've never quite jibed with Stephen King's writing I never read Carrie. Which means I was today years old when I found she's explicitly and repeatedly described as fat in the book, and we're now on our fourth adaptation and not once has that trait been adapted. I'm honestly kinda pissed off.

It's the same reason that on occasion networks will produce shows for other networks (ABC produced multiple Fox shows, Fox produced Buffy even though it was on other networks, etc.); they think there's money to be made just not with their own audience.

From a profit perspective it makes sense. If they have data to support the idea that none of these titles are driving subscriptions and are just kind of there to fill out the catalog, they're probably worth more licensed out than as exclusives. Correct, fandom has *always* had massive assholes in it. The difference is before social media you could just avoid the places they were (the comic book store, certain online forums), because now they shout on the same platforms everyone is one and it becomes harder to just avoid them outright.
