I do appreciate it, it was a little misleading to say "single texture." I've been paying attention to clever uses of vertex coloring lately. Take this (admittedly non-mario) example in KH2, where they use vertex coloring to create the outline of buildings' shadows being cast across a street

A view of the Market Street: Station Heights area of Twilight Town in Kingdom Hearts 2. The low angle of the sun causes the buildings on the side of the street to cast a shadow over the entire street and onto the buildings on the opposite side. The outline of a street lamp in the foreground can be seen in the silhouette of the shadow, as well as the outline of a railway that lies above the street, just out of frame. Street lights in the shaded area cast a small amount of light around themselves.

The same view again, but this time with textures turned off, revealing that all of the lighting information is present in the scene in the form of tinted vertices on the map's geometry.

The same view once again, but this time opened in the tool Blender with the wireframe view enabled. This reveals that surfaces that would otherwise be flat are actually made of multitudes of triangles to accommodate the shading desired by the artists, as color can only be placed specifically at vertices, not between them. To this end, a line of vertices has been highlighted to show the exact outline of the shadow, even going so far as to originate from a sharp point where the street lamp meets the ground, and spread out wider the farther it gets from that point, simulating the real life phenomenon of penumbra.

Incredibly, this implies that the shadow was entirely placed by hand by an artist, carved into the geometry of the level itself.

Not to split hairs but wouldn't the purpose of the filter be to upscale it? I can't think why you would intentionally want your promo art to look like this otherwise

Less sure about the characters, I agree with you that they wouldn't need to use AI to separate them, but they definitely used AI in some capacity on the background, even if just in upscaling

Sorry man, it's AI generated. The inflatable shoes stay glued to his feet despite no interior structure being visible, and if the concrete floor of the pool was so shallow then these guys would have to be sticking their lower halves through it

Got some good pictures of the weirdest lyrics

Sanrio characters stand upon a floating, rotating stage that is a wretched amalgam of arbitrary sea life, food, and temples. The whole thing hovers in the middle of a digital coliseum with binary strings raining from the sky. It is surrounded by floating signs which say things like "GENERATE," "PROCESSING," and "PROMPT." Subtitles for the lyrics say, "Let's Generate Let's Generate"

After a cursory search, I found this article, where the author presents basically the same equation: blog.demofox.org/2019/12/07/b... Only here, they've replaced the combinations of coefficients with subscripted constants like you might expect of values that you're supposed to plug in yourself.

Worth noting that the picture and accompanying desc. were written by one guy in 2003, with no edits since other than for formatting. At one point, this is what the entire page for Bezier Triangle looked like. I think this is a case of bad notation, and possibly a not necessarily correct equation.

I think of KH3 as a good example of a game with a lot of clutter but doesn't use specifically yellow paint to draw your eyes to where you're supposed to go, they just use subtler techniques that were already being used in the industry. Chests *are* yellow, but don't look haphazardly painted yellow
