Seems to me like complaining about virtue signaling is actually a form of virtue signaling, when what it takes to stop people from meaninglessly virtue signaling is helping them grow into more actualized versions of themselves. The real work is staying in community with assholes sometimes.

The truth of any character is made up not only of what the creator intended but also how their work is perceived. I think “accuracy” is only useful as a metric insofar as it allows a creator to tailor their work to give the intended vibe or meaning.

If punk means doing the unexpected to subvert the status quo in positive ways, then the most punk thing we can do in these trying times is reach out to our friends. Those in power have created a world that is meant to make us each individually isolated and lonely, and fighting that is important.

When you are discouraged, well-meant words of encouragement can make things worse. Often a treacherous part of you will revel in your own misery, punishing you for your perceived failings. Rebuke that enemy within. Allow yourself to accept encouragement, to see forward, and to know hope.
