Not only are electrical scooters an abomination in itself and a road hazard. But why do they also attract the dumbest people? They either drive them in groups of 2-4, or they look back while driving 20 km/t, or both.

Took a retro bus yesterday from 1966 in Oslo. Sure, it smells more, not as energy efficient, and has a harsh jumpstart. But I am so deep into nostalgia these days, that I really liked it: so compact, so light, and no screens ☺️

“Disclosing the use of AI” sounds to me just like “disclosing plagiarism”. If you plagiarize, you are out. There is no discussion. Same rule should be applied to the use of genAI. But for some people don’t find this obvious.

New paper alert! I´m glad to share with you the result of my collaboration with data scientist and philosopher Jens Ulrik Hansen (Roskilde University). Here, we aim to bring clarity to a somewhat overhyped concept of "synthetic data", using the relational view on data. #synthetic #data #philosophy

On the Conceptualization of Synthetic Data: Why Not All Synthetic Data are Useful and Some are - Minds and Machines
Synthetic data are increasingly used across the sciences and industry and are widely regarded as a solution to data problems such as privacy, bias mitigation, and data insufficiency. At the same time, the “promises” of synthetic data have faced substantial scholarly critique. We argue that much of the disagreement surrounding the usefulness of synthetic data stems from a lack of clarity about what synthetic data actually are and what they can do. In this paper, we examine several conceptualizations of synthetic data and propose a refined concept of synthesized data that more accurately captures the phenomenon commonly referred to as synthetic data. We argue that synthetic data cannot be conceptualized in contrast with other types of data. Moreover, there is no meaningful difference between synthetic data and data. We further prove this argument through an Iceberg model of the process of data synthetization and utilization, which addresses the “submerged” data risks such as bias, privacy, and validity, thus ensuring the usefulness of synthesized data. Our approach is grounded in a relational view of data, which links their intended purpose with their method of generation. We further elaborate this connection through concrete examples. In conclusion, we demonstrate the complexity of synthesized data in relation to their utility, which often remains hidden in current discourse on synthetic data.

Being raised in Russia, I of course had a number of traumatic reading experiences as a child. I will give you a classic: Turgenev’s “Mumu” is about a deaf peasant who is forced to drown his dog in a lake. Read in school, of course. One doesn’t really recover from this.

Not to be dramatic but I feel like living past 2019 was a mistake. Covid, the Ukraine war, Gaza genocide, and now seeing everyone around me using ChatGPT (or whatever) for everything — I’ve learned enough about this world and about people. I have to leave the society or I won’t make it, I feel.

In the book, I explain what everyone needs to know about military operations and the conduct of war. It is not an academic book but rather an easily accessible introduction for everyone who is concerned about what's going on in the world and wants a deeper understanding of the military mechanics.

All my life, I have always read slowly. Tried an audiobook once but my mind kept wandering from it. Heard about immersive (book + audio) reading, but didn’t want to pay twice for one book. This week I think I have found a perfect focus combo: non-fiction audiobook while walking in the city.

Another group of people I might never understand no matter how I try: those believing the question of whether AI has consciousness is the most pressing problem in the world at the moment. It’s not even in my top 100 of currently pressing issues. Just why? Why do they care about that of all things?

Rapidly losing my social circle to AI (meaning, LLM-based chatbots). I just can’t understand the allure. Why are people so drawn to such mediocre tech? For me, in terms of need and convenience, it’s similar to home assistants and fitness wearables. Never had them, never missed on anything.

About Washington Post today. When the first war in Ukraine began in 2014, Putin shifted owners and editors in the leading news organizations. Then the journalists were either pressured to write propaganda or were laid off. Eight years later -- the full-scale invasion became possible.

At some point (when I got 30) I abandoned any attempts to “save” my parents from themselves. And then (I realize it now) I also gave up on saving anybody. I still sometimes get the urge to help, to educate, to save. But increasingly I realize this is futile. Maybe making own mistakes is the way.

That would be true for any society:) People of Russia, Iran, and North Korea think similar thoughts from time to time. But also, it is an illusion to think that the murderous president appears out of thin air and has nothing to do with the nice people of his country.

It is quite irritating that the moment a technology shows some new functionality, the first explanation is always either “intelligence” or “consciousness”. These concepts rooted in human experience should be left alone. Why so unimaginative? Can’t we come up with more interesting explanations?

This depends a lot on the type of reasons for why they disagreed in the first place. If they only changed their opinion because THEIR OWN (human) rights became endangered, it tells me they don’t and won’t care about others. So nothing has changed.

Why do we still think they don’t know what’s going on? No, people consciously choose to believe what they want. They watch exactly what they choose. Have we considered that they are simply awful people? Or yes, you can say they are traumatized, they had bad childhood, anything can be explained.
