Dante never imagined a punishment as humiliating as having to debate Republican podcasters for eternity.

This is something that has never happened to anyone for being transphobic but will happen to trans women who break the guidelines this woman has dictated.

1984 is not a particularly complex book and it's very important to it's politics that the punishment for wrongthink is not simply collective disagreement or namecalling. It's being imprisoned by the state and subjected to physical torture.

Everything else aside I'm always irritated by the rhetorical trick where the government appointed head of organisation which is here expected to dictate the law is framed as a "heretic" while the activists, who have no power or sway on the government, are "Orwellian".

Watch 10 movies and a TV show to understand the backstory of all the characters, most of whom will just stand around in the background of a dozen scenes with just enough one-liners to justify putting their name in the credits.

"Look buddy, you don't want to be Miyamoto Musashi wandering Japan on a quest to understand the true nature of the warrior's soul. You want to be a loyal retainer who hangs around your master's house intimidating peasants until Miyamoto Musashi rolls up and turns you into red mist."

That reminds me of the some of the Samurai RPGs which really wanted to emphasise that Ronin were social pariahs and you should be dutiful servants to your lord. Which is accurate to the attitudes of historical samurai but misses that there's a reason most iconic chanbara films are about ronin.

Trans women have to be statistically the least athletic demographic in the world. They really don't need all these rules for us.

In my experience the same chud spaces that fetishise femboys now had the same attitude to trans women 10-15 years ago when their only exposure to trans women was via pornography. Now their leaders have designated trans women as political enemies they have to shift that fetishism to a new target.

Going back to the master today. No writer has ever understood it like he does.

A collection of books by Thomas Ligotti.

I've been reading Hyperion recently. I'm about halfway through right now and while it definitely has issues, it's really reminded me why I loved big sci-fi novels. The way it keeps throwing out these big abstract ideas and weird setting details out there is so captivating to me.

Picked up some new books today while I was out. Never read any Simmons or Genet but I remember reading one of the Moderan stories in Dangerous Visions and it made a huge impression on me, very cool to see the stories all collected again.

Hyperion by Dan Simmons, Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet and Moderan by David R. Bunch

Managed to pick up some new books recently! Really looking forward to diving into them. I've never actually actually read much Danielewski but I got tempted into picking up Tom's Crossing on a whim. (Pynchon of course is an old favourite).

Two books. Shadow Ticket by Thomas Pynchon and Tom's Crossing my Mark Z Danielewski.

I watched Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower this evening which I've been meaning to watch for a bout 13 years. I regret not tracking it down much sooner, what a beautiful, brutal movie. An instant favourite. There's a lot to treasure here but Gong Li's costuming is burned into my soul.

Catching up with the reviews for One Battle After Another and it's a great filter to just ignore any critic who starts by talking about a film's budget and the studios finances at the beginning of the review.

Fear & Hunger's premise of "What if Griffith was rescued and then took on the God Hand?" Is incredibly hackish but the game makes it work by giving us the answer "Everyone would die in the most awful ways imaginable."

Playing through Fear & Hunger and this game feels like the most accurate version of how a traditional; "Dungeon Crawl" would go in that you just have you limbs cut off and die from tetanus while crawling away from maniacally laughing head of an evil wizard. 10/10 game so far.

I always pictured Ligotti's stories taking place in a some industrial slump town made of stained concrete and rusted iron. Somewhere that resembled the decaying factory towns I grew up near. But looking at actual photos of Detroit all I see is endless American suburbia which looks more inhuman.

I managed to see Weapons just before it left the cinema here. I know I'm late to the party but I really enjoyed it. It managed to thread the needle between being suspenseful and then very funny at times. I loved the shifting perspectives following various threads to a really fun climax.

Waking up and finding out that the government has quite casually removed all trans people's rights is painful enough. But having to watch as all the most rancid bigots on either side of the Atlantic celebrate the pain and misery they've caused is unbearable.

I spent over ten hours travelling yesterday to see a doctor so that he could tell me that if I get my testicles removed I will be unable to have children. (This is the second time I've had to travel to see a doctor and be told this) I had to restrain myself from replying by just reciting Kafka.

I'm genuinely a bit surprised at how the "romantasy" genre seems to have taken over fantasy lit but there's been almost no effort to court that audience from Hollywood or the games industry. I feel sure that whoever makes a gacha/dating sim about collecting a harem of fairy boys would outsell CoD.

Partly it's just how internet fandom works but it's sickening to see a beautiful complex series used by Redditors. Instead of engaging with the themes of the manga they're "evilscaling" Griffith to see how he compares with Judge Holden or discussing how Casca ranks as an anime waifu.

I've even found multiple Greek and Roman statues of Dionysos where he clearly has breasts but the museum descriptions are just "This statue is unusual as the god does not have the usual vines in his hair" and no comment on his tits.

Jasmine @cosmicjasmine.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

It's not like it even gets denied, I read a 170 page book on his cult which offhandedly states "The effeminacy and transvestism of Dionysos is well established in writings from 500 bc to 600 ad." and then never mentions the topic again.

Jasmine @cosmicjasmine.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

My obsession with Nietzsche has led me to start reading up on the Greek worship of Dionysos. Which is incredibly frustrating as a trans person because Dionysos was frequently depicted as an androgynous cross dresser but this aspect seems to be of no interest to the academics who write about him.

It's hard to overstate how much David Lynch's films mean to me. Some of my happiest memories as a teen are being introduced to his works by a boy I had a crush on. And later taking a girl who had a crush on me to see Wild at Heart in the cinema. Farewell to one of the great artists of our times.
