My latest art from @aquariumpacific.bsky.social, a composite of multiple moments, since the Pacific sea nettles (and people) were constantly moving around. I was going for something more abstract since there were so many jellies.

Instead, many species of comb jellies trail two long tentacles that are lined with adhesive cells (colloblasts), which then stick to their prey. These tentacles and colloblats often twist into some interesting and beautiful shapes, which I’ll try to capture in future drawings.

Comb jellies don’t swim by contracting a muscular bell, and they can’t sting because they don’t have any stinging cells. Instead, they swim using rows of paddle-like hairs, which also refract light like a prism, which people commonly mistaken for bioluminescence.

Drawing of this week from @aquariumpacific.bsky.social: California sea gooseberry (Hormiphora californensis), a species of comb jelly. I’ve had a long-time fascination with comb jellies, which are actually not jellyfish at all, but only superficially look like them.

Even wilder than that, I found this recent study finding that barrel jellies have also have “anal pores” that is separate from their mouths: journals.plos.org/plosone/article?i…

Alex L @corynactis.bsky.social · 29/06/2026

I specifically picked the barrel jelly because I recently learned that the jellies in the Order Rhizostomeae don’t have a standard singular mouth, but a network of “tiny mouths” on their succulent oral arms.

I recently hired a friend to teach me how to draw, however I haven’t been drawing outside of our lessons. I decided to change that at the @aquariumpacific.bsky.social a week ago, but I was rushed and forgot my supplies, so I used what I had to draw this barrel jelly (Rhizostoma pulmo).

Come watch me and my classmates improvise an hour long play at Outside In Theatre (Los Angeles) on Fridays from Oct 25-Nov 21 at 7:30pm. It’s been an incredibly fun class taught by Monica Alquetz and Paul Hungerford, can’t wait for you to see it. Tix: outsideintheatre.vbotickets.com/event/class_...
