So when people insist "but 'chai' means 'tea'!!" They are confusing the translation of the original word from Hindustani with the meaning of the borrowed and now separate word in English. They're also ignoring that English "chai" is an ellipsis of "masala chai" and not a direct borrowing by itself.

In English "spaghetti" has also become an adjective meaning "long and very thin" such as spaghetti straps on a dress. It can also mean tangled like the term "spaghetti wiring". The original word in Italian does not have these extra meanings that English has generated for its version of the word.

The word "spaghetti" is a great example of this. In English it can mean a specific dish of spaghetti noodles plus tomato sauce with meat in it, but if you order spaghetti while on vacation in Italy, they will ask you what type of sauce you want with the noodles.

You would get black tea in steamed milk with spices (a masala chai) with an added shot of peppermint flavor. I would get peppermint leaves steeped in boiled water. Two very different drinks.

If the English word "chai" just meant "tea" , generically speaking, then you and I could go to a cafe and you ask the barista for a peppermint chai and I ask for a peppermint tea and we would both get the exact same drink. But I think we both know that wouldn't happen. 😉

In English we didn't borrow the word "chai" to mean "tea", we borrowed the phrase "masala chai" to mean a specific drink--black tea with steamed milk and spices-- and then we shortened that down to just chai, but still meaning that same specific drink.

The chart shows clear patterns worth noting: The red cluster (sparse slices, n < 20) in the 10²³–10²⁴ range is very noisy—b swings from -0.42 to +1.42, which makes sense given only 6–17 data points going into the MCMC.
