We got cancelled & thrown off the train; I waited 15 min as they said the 0839 would run, then the 0739 was somehow uncancelled and I'm nearly at Bath. It's utter carnage, even the staff have no clue what's running where - I was literally talking to the driver and crew when they got uncancelled.

It's now been cancelled after I sat on it for 15 minutes. They could have said that 15 minutes ago...

Somehow my train (the 0739) is essentially the only thing running out of Didcot this morning (I think there's a gas leak somewhere just slightly downstream in the London direction). Hopefully it'll be fixed in time for me to go home tonight...

I knew my email volume had got worse over the last few years, but I've now made the error of crunching the numbers. This year I have received ~1000 emails/month (and sending ~600) or, as an alternative way of thinking about it, involved in a rolling total ~700 email threads/month. Ugh.

Any chance you could send over a DOI for the paper on this that you mention? We've just started a project as part of aria.org.uk/opportunity-... where we're trying to do something analogous with breaking internal atmospheric waves in the lower stratosphere.

I'm at a restaurant in Wroclaw and every time the waiter gives me something he just says "you're welcome". It's clearly a badly-matched translation of a Polish expression and he's just being polite, but it sounds just beautifully passive-aggresive in English.

It's just getting it consistently wrong here in Florence every day - it was definitely way over 32 yesterday, and every day for at least as long as I've been here (since Wednesday). It was over 32 at *10pm*, never mind the peak.
Florence max T yesterday was 32C

As part of a larger team, the postholder will use a range of observational and model techniques to study atmospheric gravity waves, with the aim being to start merging together different observations (in a careful and accurate way) so we can better constrain atmospheric models.

As an example, this figure shows the magnitude and direction of the time-mean momentum flux - the models are all different from both each other and the obs, highlighting their different internal physics and the challenges of reproducing real-world GWs in a model

This method lets us do loads of careful analysis and learn a lot about how well the models do - this figure shows a 1:1 comparison between the obs (left) and the models for a wave observed in the first day of the run before the conditions diverged between them.
Figure 4 of Noble et al ACP 2026, showing an example wave in all four datasets. ICON does badly here.

We spectrally analyse both the real and synthetic waves to assess their properties, then compare them to see how well the models perform. (I made the original version of this figure for the fellowship proposal that started my career, so I'm glad we finally wedged a version of it into a paper...)

In it, we take three high-res (3-5km) weather model runs archived by DYAMOND, apply techniques we've developed over the last few years to reproduce data from the AIRS satellite as closely as possible, then use a CNN-based wave detection mask to study just the GWs like-for-like with the real obs.
