I think a lot of things go wrong when we mistake programming metaphors for how the computer works. You might have object-oriented programming but it is only one computer; it's just a way of keeping track of how the program works. Similarly, we'd think about AI differently if rather than "agents"...

I keep thinking about the Halimede surgery post and how it locates transness in the penis, rather than something holistic that lives throughout the body, your experience, and history. I don't like the idea that everything is fair game to change right up until the dick, that's when we call it.

The way AI is going to “kill everyone” is just by manufacturing consent for ever worse outcomes & conditions, like many governments do. It is a governing technology after all. And like bureaucracy it launders responsibility so the people & institutions who deploy it aren’t accountable for the harms

Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

Honestly this isn't even including some of the other dead ends I went down. I also tried using a vfx graph particle system, a regular particle system, a rope plugin I'm using elsewhere in the project.

Eventually I realize I'm doing it again and I can be doing something a lot simpler. All I ACTUALLY need is two poses, one for when the string is straight, and the pose I want it to be in when its snapped. I can just use shape keys for this. A few bezier curves later and I have this:

I tried to parallelize it but I'm still not super comfortable with compute shaders. There's probably also a way to do this well with Jobs, but I kept feeling like I was making things more complicated than it needed to be

I'd originally been using line renderers and was trying to push the points around in code. But that was pretty hard to get looking right and worse, it was slow. Turns out you need a lot of points to make the effect look smooth and with ~2 strings on each enemy it adds up

AI is not a "neutral tool" that needs to be wielded by The Good Guys. there's no reforming a system to accumulate and centralize power. the totalizing aggregation of power means that anyone it touches gets crushed instantly. that is AI, inescapably.
