After the hearing, MEP Satouri (chair, Human Rights Committee) and MEP Bullmann (head of the SA delegation) wrote to the European Commission. The question: why does Europe keep exporting thousands of tonnes of pesticides banned for use here — and what is it doing to stop it?

🏆 Judge Navi Pillay just won the Nobel Peace Prize. Pillay chaired UN commission that concluded Israel was guilty of genocide in Gaza. Earlier this year she told MEPs exactly what EU pesticide export double standards cost people around the world. The Commission still hasn’t answered her. Thread 🧵👇

"The paper trail is striking. Once again, we can trace pesticide-industry demands into the Omnibus proposals and parliamentary amendments, in some cases almost word for word", @nina-holland.bsky.social , CEO researcher. The committee vote is 5 November. There is still time.
Quote graphic by Corporate Europe Observatory. A photo of Nina Holland, researcher and campaigner at CEO, appears on the left. The quote reads: 'The paper trail is striking. Once again, we can trace pesticide-industry demands into the Omnibus proposals and parliamentary amendments, in some cases almost word for word. While the industry interests were carefully catered for, the thousands of citizens and scientists calling for stronger health protection were ignored. Omnibus X risks locking Europe into continued reliance on harmful pesticides, rather than delivering the transition towards safer alternatives that policymakers claim to support. This is exactly why we need a firewall between the pesticide industry and policymaking, so that those who profit from pesticides cannot write the rules governing their use.'

Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) @corporateeurope.org · 07/10/2026
An internal CropLife presentation reveals it's a coordinated strategy, not to speed up safer alternatives, but to slow down bans. And while demanding alternatives exist before bans, the same industry is opposing fast-track approval for biocontrol products. Make it make sense.
145
Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) @corporateeurope.org · 07/10/2026
Banned a pesticide? Under these proposals, it could stay on shelves for three more years. That's the "grace period" offered in the Omnibus, “if no alternative”. Dorfmann and Picaro made it a blanket default, exactly what CropLife Europe and Bayer asked for. No coincidence. No shame.
Campaigning graphic against an EU flag background. At the top right, photos of two pesticide industry representatives are labelled 'the pesticide lobby': Claus-Stephan Schraff (Bayer) and Olivier de Matos (CropLife Europe), with arrows pointing to an Omnibus X document proposing to extend grace periods for banned pesticides up to 3 years. Two MEPs — Michele Picaro and Herbert Dorfmann — are shown holding a European Parliament Committee on Environment document proposing a '3 year grace period for all banned pesticides as default.' A silhouette of a child with raised hands appears at the bottom, partially obscured by the document.

Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) @corporateeurope.org · 07/10/2026
Industry wanted unlimited pesticide approvals: no renewal, no check of latest evidence, ‘forever’. DG SANTE discussed this with CropLife and Copa-Cogeca in Oct25. Two months later it appeared in the Omnibus draft. Dorfmann and Picaro went further, extending it retroactively, as BASF had demanded 🎯
Campaigning graphic split into two halves. On the left, blue silhouettes of lobbyists labelled Bayer, BASF, Copa-Cogeca, and CropLife Europe, with a speech bubble reading 'Give us pesticide permits that last forever!' One figure sprays a bottle marked with a skull and crossbones. On the right, against an EU flag background, a green arrow connects the pesticide industry to an 'Omnibus X' document dripping green liquid, which feeds back to a cutout photo of a man labelled 'Varhelyi,' who holds up his hand with a badge reading 'Citizens Keep Out.'
146
Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) @corporateeurope.org · 07/10/2026
Using Freedom of Information requests, we traced demands from Bayer, BASF, CropLife Europe and Copa-Cogeca directly into the Commission's Omnibus proposal, and into amendments by EP co-rapporteurs Dorfmann (EPP) and Picaro (ECR). In some cases, the wording is almost identical.
