My recommendations: 1) Return to a serial format with longer stories that span 3-4 episodes each. 2) Let the message inform the story, not be the story. 3) Make the Doctor vulnerable, not godlike. Bonus: Whenever possible, film in a quarry or at Battersea Power Station.
